Women's Tennis Falls 4-3 at San Diego State

March 01, 2025 | Women's Tennis

SAN DIEGO – The UCLA women's tennis team was outlasted by San Diego State in a 4-3 result Saturday afternoon at Aztec Tennis Center. The match was decided by a third-set tiebreaker.

Zoe Olmos clinched the win for the Aztecs (6-4), who overcame a 3-1 deficit in singles play. Four singles matches went to third sets. Kate Fakih and Anne-Christine Lutkemeyer picked up singles victories for the Bruins (5-3), who earned the doubles point without a loss.

Playing together for the first time, Bianca Fernandez and Kimmi Hance beat Olmos and Gloria Alogo 6-2 on Court 3 to give UCLA the initial advantage in doubles play. The first point was then clinched by the 59th-ranked combination of Lutkemeyer and Ahmani Guichard, which won the final three games against Jo-Yee Chan and Ninon Martinache to complete a 6-3 win on Court 2.

SDSU won four singles first sets to begin shifting momentum in its favor. Varul pulled the Aztecs level on Court 6, where she topped Center by a 6-2, 6-2 score.

The only other straight-set decision favored the Bruins, as No. 42 Fakih defeated Alogo 6-4, 6-3 on Court 3. Fakih is 7-0 in dual-match singles play and leads her team with 21 total singles victories.

No. 28 Lutkemeyer closed strong to take down Kabbaj by a 6-3, 2-6, 6-2 count on the top court. Lutkemeyer improved to 2-0 on the top singles court in 2025.

Martinache got the best of Fernandez, 6-1, 0-6, 6-4 on Court 4, cutting SDSU's deficit in half. Chan then held off Hance for a 6-2, 6-7(6), 6-4 win on Court 2, steering all eyes toward Court 5.

With Guichard serving for the team victory at 6-5, she had her serve broken by Olmos. Guichard took the tiebreaker's first point, but Olmos charged back to win 6-4, 3-6, 7-6(3).

UCLA next heads across town to face rival USC on Friday, March 7. First serve in the non-conference contest is scheduled for 3 p.m. PT. The Bruns were previously scheduled to visit the University of San Diego Sunday, but the match canceled.
