Full Bruin Fleet Qualifies for Grand Finals in San Diego

March 29, 2025 | Women's Rowing

SAN DIEGO โ€“ UCLA Women's Rowing wraps day one at the San Diego Crew Classic with all seven shells qualifying for Sunday's Grand Final races.
ย
The Bruins advance from the preliminary rounds and heats in all six races they competed in Saturday. "I'm really proud of the work the entire team has committed to over the last 3 weeks - we asked everyone to lean in and they responded," said associate head coach Anna Thomson. "To have every crew qualify for the Grand Finals is a huge achievement and we look forward to getting out there tomorrow and finding even more speed."
ย
The first V8+ started things off for a successful day in San Diego in heat two of the Jessop-Whittier/Cal Cup Collegiate Invitational. The Bruins fought against Notre Dame in an adjacent lane and came down to the line locked in battle with the Fighting Irish.
ย
"The trust in our boat and the race plan really paid off," said junior Audrey Loeb, who competed in the V8+ Saturday morning. "Even when we were down, I had complete confidence that we would come back, trusting everyone would execute the plan and we did!"
ย
The Bruins held on for a close finish; UCLA edged the Fighting Irish by four tenths of a second to place third in the heat. UCLA continued its day on the water in the Varsity 4+ Karen Plumleigh Cortney Cup. The Bruins finished five seconds ahead Washington State to place third in heat two; Grand Finals are slated to go at 10:14 a.m. on Sunday.
ย
"I'm really proud of my boat and the whole team for buying in and executing this morning," said junior Danielle DeFrancisci, who sat stern in the V4+ for the Bruins. "We lined up with a goal, stayed locked in, and are looking forward to another opportunity to race tomorrow."
ย
The Bruins stayed steady in the 2V8+, once again outpacing Notre Dame for third place in the heat. UCLA will line up in lane six for tomorrow's second varsity 8+ Grand Final. The Bruins' novice 8+ will also compete for the Laurel Korholz Perpetual Trophy in Sunday's set of races after qualifying through prelims โ€“ only Washington and USC finished ahead of UCLA in the novice competition Saturday. UCLA's Open 8+ finished its prelims in 7:15.494; the Bruins will take lane five in Sunday's Grand Final.
ย
The Bruins lined up two four-person shells in heat two of the Women's Collegiate B 4+ competition to close out the afternoon in San Diego. They finished second and third, respectively, to secure two spots in Grand Finals.
ย
UCLA begins competition at 9:30 a.m. PT and will wrap its six races around midday Sunday.
