LAST WEEK'S RECAPย ย ย ย ย ย
UCLA was unable to get the bats going in its 8-3 defeat to No. 14 Vanderbilt, mustering just three hits on the night. The bullpen shined, however, holding the nationally-ranked Commodores to just two hits over seven innings of scoreless ball.
The Bruins ultimately won the weekend after rattling off wins over UConn and USC on Saturday and Sunday. In the win over UConn, UCLA used a five-run fifth inning to take a lead that it would not relinquish for the remainder of the contest. Freshman Wylan Moss held UConn scoreless over two innings of work to earn the six-out save, his second of the year. Roch Cholowsky blasted a three-run home run in the fifth followed by a solo shot in the seventh to lead the Bruins to a 5-1 win over their crosstown rivals. The pitching staff kept the bats in check, limiting the Trojans to just one run.
In its final midweek contest before the start of conference play, UCLA exploded for 16 hits and 22 runs in its dominant run-rule victory over Michigan. With the 10-run mercy rule in effect and the Bruins leading 22-5, the game was called after seven innings. ABOUT THE TERRAPINS
Maryland will be hosting UCLA for the first time as the previous encounters between the teams took place in Westwood. The Terrapins won two out of three games in their series-opening matchup in February 2012 in their first-ever meeting. In the 2015 Los Angeles Regional, the Bruins hosted Maryland, and the Terrapins again won two of the three contests to advance to a super regional.
Maryland enters the weekend riding high, having won four of its last five games, including a thrilling 9-8 victory over No. 12 Wake Forest. The Terrapins showcased their offensive prowess with their 35-12 win against Western Carolina. However, their pitching staff has shown some vulnerability, with a 5.45 ERA that places them in the lower half of the Big Ten rankings.
