Tinsley Throws Second Career No-Hitter Against San Diego State
March 08, 2025 | Softball
SAN DIEGO, Calif. โ Junior right-handed pitcher Taylor Tinsley tossed the second no-hitter of her career to lead the No. 6-ranked UCLA softball team to a 5-0 victory over San Diego State at SDSU Softball Stadium Saturday evening.
ย
The Bruins (22-4) also defeated Sacramento State in mercy-rule fashion, 11-1, earlier in the day.
ย
Tinsley struck out nine batters and allowed just two baserunners โ one walk and one off a fielding error โ in her spectacular outing. The performance marked the 124th total and 116th solo no-hitter in UCLA history, and was the team's first since Megan Faraimo's no-no against Florida in February 2023.
ย
"The no-hitter felt really good and it was even better to do it and win the game with this team," Tinsley said. "I know that this team has my back no matter what. With such an amazing offense and defense behind me, it makes my job really easy.
ย
"I felt like Maggie (Daniel) and I work really well together as a battery, and our energy flowed together really well. Working with Coach (Kelly Inouye-Perez) between innings, seeing how to attack batters took everything to the next level, we were on the same page working as a unit."
ย
Tinsley's first no-hitter came in her collegiate debut versus CSU Bakersfield at Easton Stadium her freshman season in 2023, although that was only a five-inning game. Her no-hitter tonight came against a San Diego State program that has made three straight NCAA Tournament appearances and won the last three Mountain West Conference championships.
ย
With her impressive showing tonight, Tinsley dropped her earned run average from 3.05 entering today down to 2.56. She now has two complete games under her belt this season. The Bruins' defense played solidly all night with their infield totaling six groundouts, including two on the last two plays of the game. The lone error was a ball hit to third baseman Jordan Woolery who was unable to cleanly pick a backhand and throw over to first in time. On the season, UCLA boasts a top-10 defense in terms of fielding percentage (.984).
ย
Offensively, the Bruins broke through on Aztecs (15-9) starting pitcher DeeDee Hernandez in the third inning with a three-run homer by Savannah Pola. Pola finished the game with a career-high-tying four base hits and was a triple shy of the cycle. The senior from Santa Ana recorded her first career four-hit game just last week versus Weber State on March 1.
ย
Pola sparked UCLA's next scoring outburst three innings later in the top of the sixth with a leadoff double into the right field corner. She came around to score one batter later off another double, this time by junior Megan Grant. Grant's pinch runner scored the Bruins' fifth and final run of the night of a single up the middle by freshman Rylee Slimp.
ย
Pola leads UCLA with nine doubles this season and is one of three Bruin boppers hitting above .400 with a .435 clip.
ย
Earlier on Saturday, UCLA run ruled Sacramento State for a second straight game in the two teams' rematch from Friday night. Graduate Jessica Clements, who is riding a 10-game hitting streak after today's games, recorded a career-high five runs batted in off a double and triple against the Hornets (12-11).
ย
Clements, the all-time leading hitter in Cal Poly history prior to arriving in Westwood in 2025, has not skipped a beat and paces the Bruins with a .449 batting average (40-for-89) through 26 games.
ย
Grant opened the scoring in game one with a solo blast off the right field scoreboard for her 10th homer of the season. The home run marked her fifth straight game leaving the yard, a feat that was last accomplished by B.B. Bates in 2013. Grant is tied with Woolery for the team lead in homers.
ย
Freshman Kaniya Bragg also homered in the game. UCLA has homered in nine straight games and has multiple longballs in eight of those contests. On the season, the Bruins are averaging 1.58 home runs per game (41 HR/26 GP) which is their best rate since the 2010 NCAA title season.
ย
Pitching wise in game one, freshman Addisen Fisher improved the perfect start to her UCLA career to 8-0 by throwing her second complete game of the season. Fisher struck out eight batters and allowed one run to score off three straight singles to lead off the fourth inning.
