Bruins Wrap Dual Meet against Trojans to Open Spring Season
March 08, 2025 | Women's Rowing
LOS ANGELES – UCLA Women's Rowing competed against USC for the Amy Fuller Kearney-Lori Guerro Azbill Trophy Saturday. The Trojans came away victorious, winning the rivalry regatta 20-3 at the Port of Los Angeles.
The Bruins started the day with back-to-back victories in the 3V4+ and 2V4+ races to jump out to a 3-0 lead on the day. The 3V4+ had open water in the first race of the day; UCLA's 4V4+ also finished ahead of USC's four-person shell.
UCLA pulled away early in the 2v4+ race, seeing a boat length between shells until the Trojans closed the gap in the final 500 meters. The Bruins held strong and took the second race of the day, crossing before the Trojans by a three-second margin.
"This was an important first race of the season, and while we recognize areas where we need to execute better, we also saw great moments of speed and competitiveness," said Associate Head Coach Anna Thomson. "We're incredibly proud of the 32 athletes who lined up for their first-ever collegiate 2K—competing at this level is a significant milestone and they all took a lot from this experience. We're eager to apply what we've learned, dive back into training, and continue building as we prepare for the San Diego Crew Classic in three weeks."
USC got on the scoreboard in the first eight-person boat race of the morning; the Bruins finished eight seconds behind the Trojans in the 3V8+ race. UCLA fought for the closest finish of the day in the 2V8+, coming down to the final sprint to determine the winner of the second varsity eight. UCLA fell behind in the final race of the day, finishing 12 seconds behind the Trojans in the 1V8+. The Trojans finished the day up 20-3 on the scoreboard to capture the Amy Fuller Kearney-Lori Guerro Azbill Trophy.
