Rowing Puts on Strong Showing during Final Day of Big Ten Invitational
April 19, 2025 | Women's Rowing
SARASOTA, Fla. – UCLA Rowing claimed a top-three finish in each of the six races in which it competed to close out the 2025 Big Ten Invitational in Sarasota, Fla., on Saturday.
"It was a great opportunity to step up to the level of competition at our first Big Ten Invitational as a new member of the conference, racing against thirteen of the top 25 programs in the country," said interim head coach Anna Thomson. "This regatta is always one of the highlights of our season, and it provided an insightful preview of the Big Ten Championships in just a few weeks. We faced some early challenges in the varsity eights as we worked to find the speed needed to be competitive at this level. After a few lineup adjustments, both crews responded well - demonstrating grit and adaptability. It was great to see them regroup and finish the weekend with a strong second and third place finish in windy conditions. There's still more speed to be found, but with a few technical refinements, I'm confident we'll continue to build toward peak performance."
The Bruins got out to a good start in the 3V8+ to begin Saturday's competition. UCLA trailed No. 24 USC and Notre Dame by less than six seconds for a third-place finish to open the final round of racing. The second varsity four continued the momentum for the Bruins and recorded a 7:39.793 to place second in its final appearance of the weekend.
"It was awesome to be neck-and-neck with some of the top programs in the country, and I think that's a testament to all the work the team has put in day in and day out," said junior Angela Devine. "I can't wait to see the progress we make between now and the Big Ten Championships!"
UCLA (6:41.048) outpaced Notre Dame (6:41.501) for an impressive second-place finish in the 1V8+ flight Saturday morning in Florida. The Bruins edged out the Fighting Irish by less than five tenths of a second after a hard-fought 2,000-meter race and finished only behind No. 18 Harvard-Radcliffe.
"It was so special to be back racing on my home course in Florida with the team this weekend," said sophomore Bridget McLaughlin. "What really stood out was the depth and speed across all of our boats. We've been putting in a lot of hard work at practice, and it showed in the results. Every crew was competitive and placed well, which really speaks to the progress we've made and the strength we have as a team."
The 3V4+ shot out to a lead in the final race of the day, maintaining open water in the second half as the Bruins took home a first-place finish to close out the Big Ten Invitational. UCLA took down No. 21 Indiana (8:02.896), No. 24 USC (8:07.882) and No. 20 Oklahoma (8:17.639) in the final flight of the weekend.
"Across the board, we had excellent racing, taking down several nationally ranked teams," continued Coach Thomson. "Our 2V8+ delivered one of the standout performances of the weekend, beating #17 Oregon State and #14 Ohio State. Our 3V8+ beat #16 Duke and #21 Indiana, and our 3V4+ capped off the regatta with a commanding first-place finish over #21 Indiana, #24 USC, and #20 Oklahoma. It was a weekend of growth, grit, and great racing, setting the tone of what UCLA rowing is capable of achieving."
