Men's Tennis Stops Spartans for Spot in Big Ten Championship Match
April 26, 2025 | Men's Tennis
COLUMBUS, Ohio – Second-seeded UCLA will play for a Big Ten Men's Tennis Tournament title after beating No. 3 seed Michigan State 4-0 in semifinal-round action Saturday at Auer Tennis Complex. The Bruins are competing in their program's first-ever tournament as a conference member.
Giacomo Revelli earned his second clinching win in as many days. Also triumphant for UCLA (15-8) on the singles courts were Kaylan Bigun and Spencer Johnson. The Spartans, who went 10-3 in Big Ten Conference play, dropped to 16-9 overall. The Bruins, who previously beat Michigan State April 13, have won seven matches in a row.
Each doubles match stayed on serve until deep in the competition. Gianluca Ballotta and Emon van Loben Sels continued to shine as a tandem, finally breaking Max Sheldon/Mitchell Sheldon for a 7-5 victory. Ballotta/van Loben Sels is 12-2 together in dual-match play. Johnson and Aadarsh Tripathi also saved their contest's first and only break for last, beating Danial Rakhmatullayev/Aritotelis Thanos 6-4 on Court 2 to clinch. Johnson/Tripathi remained undefeated as a pair, improving to 4-0.
UCLA claimed four singles first sets, with No. 110 van Loben Sels tacking on the last one against No. 13 Ozan Baris on Court 2. The redshirt sophomore from Sacramento, Calif. was unable to finish, however, as the others raced to put points on the scoreboard.
No. 32 Johnson picked up his second win in as many tries at the tournament, besting Mitchell Sheldon 6-2, 6-3 on Court 5. Out of the singles lineup between Feb. 2 and April 18, Johnson's back-to-back victories marked a first for him this year.
Bigun also improved to 2-0 on the singles courts in postseason action, knocking off No. 102 Max Sheldon by a 6-4, 6-1 count on Court 3. The ranked win was Bigun's second of the year.
In danger of seeing his second set reach 5-5, Revelli served with a deuce point up for grabs. Vuk Radjenovic's return went into the net, however, and Revelli celebrated his 6-3, 6-4 victory on Court 6.
The Bruins meet top seed and host Ohio State Sunday for the Big Ten tournament championship. First serve from the Auer Tennis Complex is set for 9 a.m. PT.
