No. 6 Softball Defeats Cal State Fullerton, 4-2, in Midweek Tilt
April 30, 2025 | Softball
LOS ANGELES โ The No. 6-ranked UCLA softball team defeated Cal State Fullerton, 4-2, in its final regular-season midweek contest of the year at Easton Stadium Wednesday evening.
ย
Freshman left fielder Rylee Slimp recorded her second straight game with three hits, going 3-for-3 with three runs scored to lead the Bruins' (46-7, 16-3 Big Ten) offense. Redshirt sophomore designated player Alexis Ramirez extended her hitting streak to seven games by logging UCLA's only extra-base hit of the night with a double to lead off the sixth inning. The Bruins totaled nine hits and only one walk as a team.
ย
Senior right-handed pitcher Jada Cecil earned her fourth win of the season (4-0) with 4.0 innings of one-run ball and three strikeouts. Crafty left-handed pitcher Kaitlyn Terry spotted 3.0 innings of relief with one earned run and five strikeouts to hold on for her first save of the season.
ย
UCLA catcher Maggie Daniel had an outstanding all-around performance with an RBI base hit and two runners caught stealing. After the Titans' (31-16) leadoff batter Kristalyn Romulo reached on a slap single in the first inning, Daniel gunned her down attempting to steal to eliminate the early threat. Daniel caught Romulo attempting to steal second base again in the third inning. Romulo was hosed by roughly five feet on each attempt.
ย
Cal State Fullerton pushed across the first run of the ballgame in the second inning. First baseman Ava Arce singled to lead off the frame and was bunted over to second base on a sacrifice by Alexia Lopez. A high-chopper hit by Sarah Coccillos skipped under the glove of UCLA's charging shortstop Kaniya Bragg and into the outfield to put runners at the corners. The Titans' No. 7 hitter Abigail Salazar hit a shallow fly to left field that was caught by Slimp. Slimp's throw home was wide right of Daniel, allowing Arce to score on the error.
ย
The Bruins answered back with a two-run, two-out rally to grab hold of the lead. With Slimp on second base and two away, Terry smashed a groundball with a 74 mile-per-hour exit velo that ricocheted off the first baseman's side and into right field to score the tying run. Terry used her speed to help generate UCLA's second run of the inning. She swiped her ninth stolen base of the year (9-9 SB-ATT) and advanced to third on an errant throw down by Cal State Fullerton's catcher. Clements singled in Terry with a ball hit deep in the hole to shortstop that took an awkward hop to take a 2-1 lead.
ย
Slimp's second hit of the night came in the fourth inning on a bloop single on the left field line that was booted by the left fielder Romulo. Slimp advanced to second base on the play and was moved up to third on a sacrifice bunt by pinch hitter Seneca Curo. With two outs, Clements hit another ball to shortstop Sarah Perez that was mishandled and scored Slimp.
ย
Daniel brought home the Bruins' final run of the night on a single into left field for her sixth run batted in of the season.
