Rowing Dominates on Senior Day

April 06, 2025 | Women's Rowing

LOS ANGELES – UCLA Rowing collected six first-place finishes during Sunday's senior day dual regatta against the University of San Diego.

"Today was truly special as we celebrated our graduating class, whose contributions to the team have been invaluable," said interim head coach Anna Thomson. "A big thank you to the San Diego Toreros for joining us, and to all the family and supporters who cheered us on throughout the day. Six races full of energy and passion made this an unforgettable experience."

The Bruins started the day with a 30-second rout of the Toreros in the second varsity 4+; UCLA launched out of lane one and didn't look back for the rest of the day. The first and second varsity 8+ sailed to 13- and 20-second victories in back-to-back races to continue a successful day on the water.

"It was amazing to see the growth of our team since the beginning of the season, and I'm excited to keep climbing this season," said senior Ella O'Neil. "it felt surreal to be celebrated as a senior. We, as seniors, have dedicated so many years to this sport, and I couldn't be more impassioned by our team."

UCLA's varsity 4+ competed in the fourth race of the dual regatta; the four-person shell crossed the finish line 18 seconds ahead of USD.

"it was amazing to see how our team has gained so much depth over the course of four years," said senior Julia Adey. "I am so honored for the opportunity to be part of a team that continues to grow with each practice and each race and to help inspire the next classes of UCLA women's rowers. I love this team and am so fortunate to be a part of it. I can't wait to see what this last season holds for us!"

The novice 8+ was the lone shell to launch in lane two at Ballona Creek this morning. The novices came away victorious, finishing in 6:36.3. UCLA's open 8+ wrapped the day with the closest competition of the regatta; San Diego battled but the Bruins proved too much for the Toreros. UCLA closed the day with a three-second win in the final race.

"Our clean sweep across all races today highlights the incredible depth and strength of our program," added Thomson. "We look forward to preparing now for racing at the Big Ten Invitational in two weeks."
