UCLA Advances to WCWS After 5-0 Win at South Carolina

May 25, 2025 | Softball

Columbia, S.C. - For the 33rd time in program history, UCLA is headed to the Women's College World Series (WCWS). The Bruins defeated South Carolina, 5-0, in game 3 of the NCAA Super Regional to advance to the WCWS for the ninth time in the last 10 seasons.

UCLA (54-11) was one out away from elimination in game two on Saturday before Jordan Woolery hit a walk-off two-run home run to extend the season. There would be no need for late-game dramatics in the decisive game on Sunday, as the Bruins scored a run in the top of the first and three in the seventh while shutting out the eighth-seeded Gamecocks (44-17).ย

"For my Bruins, I couldn't be more proud," said The Shelly Carlin UCLA Head Softball Coach Kelly Inouye-Perez. "We believe there's work, they play together, they have each other's backs. And the biggest part of all of this is we set out from the start, as every team in the country does, but to be able to be a final eight is something that is a goal, and the ability to overcome day one is because they were so committed to the process, and it allowed them to be able to take a trip back to OKC. So, I'm super excited for that." Starting pitcher Kaitlyn Terry (19-5) was outstanding for the ninth-seeded Bruins, allowing just two hits and striking out four batters in 5.2 innings. She allowed just one runner past first base and left that runner stranded at second in the third inning with a strikeout. Taylor Tinsley pitched the final 1.1 innings and preserved the shutout while earning her third save of the year.ย

The Bruin bats were hot from the start, as UCLA led off the game with three straight singles. Woolery delivered the first RBI of the game with a single up the middle to drive in Jessica Clements. Megan Grant walked to load the bases, but the Gamecocks got out of the inning with just the one run after inducing a fly out and a double play.

UCLA got an insurance run in the top of the fifth. Clements, who had three hits and scored three runs in the game, recorded a one-out double and advanced to third on a fly-out. South Carolina reliever Jori Heard then gave up an infield single to Woolery to plate Clements. The Bruins added three more in the top of the fifth. After the Gamecocks intentionally walked Grant to load the bases for Rylee Slimp, the freshman delivered with a single to score two more to double the Bruins' lead. Alexis Ramirez added another with a bloop RBI single to right center that scored Grant.ย

South Carolina threatened in the bottom of the sixth with a pair of long fly balls with a runner on base, but Bruin right fielder Liesl Osteen caught both at the warning track. Tinsley replaced Terry with two out in the sixth and allowed an infield hit to bring the go-ahead run to the plate but then struck out Ella Chancey to end the inning.ย
