Bruins Beat Oregon, 4-2, in Walk-Off Fashion at WCWS

May 29, 2025 | Softball

Oklahoma City - That old Bruin Magic returned to the Women's College World Series, as graduate student Jessica Clements hit a two-run walk-off home run in the bottom of the seventh inning to secure No. 9 seed UCLA's 4-2 win over No. 16 seed Oregon late Thursday night.ย

It was a back-and-forth contest between the two Big Ten rivals. Oregon (53-9) struck first in the top of the third with an RBI single by Kedre Luschar, only to see UCLA (55-11) take a 2-1 lead in the fourth inning on a two-run home run by catcher Alexis Ramirez. The Ducks tied the game at 2-2 in the top of the seventh following an obstruction call that overturned an out at home plate. Clements and the Bruins had the last word, however, as the graduate student ended the game after midnight with her two-out, two-run home run in her first-ever game at the Women's College Series. ย
"Yeah. I mean, this is every girl's dream," Clements said. "This has been my dream for as long as I remember. I never thought I'd be here. Super blessed to be here. ... I was just trying to take it one step at a time, one breath at a time, one pitch at a time. I had a good first hack, and it all started also with just a base winner getting on. And I was, quite honestly, just looking middle, looking for a good pitch that I want to drive, and just going for a base hit to keep the rally going, not trying to do too much. I got the payoff from it, and I'm so blessed to be here alongside to have gotten an opportunity to have that at bat. And again, that started with getting a base runner on, and yeah, I fell on top of the world. That was awesome."

Clements' walk-off homer marked the Bruins' second of the postseason after junior Jordan Woolery's two-run blast to defeat South Carolina, 5-4, in game two of Super Regionals last Saturday. Clements, who transferred to UCLA after three years at Cal Poly, hit UCLA's first walk-off homer at the WCWS since Rachel Garcia's three-run shot over Washington in 2019.

UCLA pitcher Kaitlyn Terry picked up her 20th win and 11th complete game of the season, allowing just one earned run and striking out six.

Oregon started the scoring in the top of the third inning with a little small ball. After a leadoff infield single by Kaylynn Jones, the Ducks followed with two sacrifice bunts to advance her to third base. The small ball paid off when Luschar singled down the right field line for an RBI single and a 1-0 Ducks lead. Luschar helped maintain the lead in the bottom of the inning with two nice catches in center field, including one against the wall on a long drive by Savannah Pola.

The Ducks had no chance to catch ย Ramirez's drive in the fourth inning, as the redshirt sophomore catcher launched a no-doubter to left field afterย Woolery's leadoff single to put UCLA ahead, 2-1. Ramirez continued her heroics in the top of the fifth inning, throwing out Jones, who was attempting to steal second with two outs.ย
UCLA had a chance to add on in the bottom of the sixth inning with runners at second and third with one out, but Oregon reliever Elise Sokolsky got out of the inning unscathed with a strike out and a pickoff. The missed opportunity was magnified when the Ducks tied it in the seventh. Paige Sinicki led off the inning with a double down the third base line and was bunted to third base. The next batter, Emma Cox, hit a grounder to Woolery, whose throw home to Ramirez was ahead of the runner. Ramirez tagged out Sinicki, but Oregon appealed the call, and it was overturned for obstruction at the plate, tying the game at 2-2.ย

But in the bottom of the seventh, a one-out Sofia Mujica single started the rally, and Clements ended it with her blast to left center. ย

The Bruins will next play 12th-seeded Texas Tech on Saturday at 4pm PT on ESPN, while Oregon will play Ole Miss in an elimination game on Friday night at 6:30 pm PT.
