No. 1 UCLA Posts Two Blowout Wins on Saturday

LA JOLLA, Calif. -- No. 1 UCLA (3-0) posted two blowout wins on Saturday at the Triton Invitational, defeating No. 14 UC Davis, 16-6 in the morning, and then routing No. 12 UC San Diego, 18-2, in the evening at UCSD's Canyonview Aquatic Center. The wins for the Bruins made it three victories in a row this season by double-digits. Additionally, it marked the third-largest margin of victory in series history against UC San Diego and the most since a 24-1 win in 1976. The Bruins improved to 22-0 all-time against the Aggies and 64-1 against the Tritons.

UCLA has now reached double-digit scorers in all three games this season, sporting 13 players against Navy, 10 vs. UC Davis, and 11 at UC San Diego.

In the win over the Aggies, sophomore Ryder Dodd led all scorers with five goals. It was his first game of the year after he missed the Navy game due to illness. Redshirt senior Chase Dodd scored four points against UC Davis (two goals, two assists). Sophomore Bode Brinkema also scored a pair of goals against the Aggies and added an assist for a total of three points.

Redshirt sophomore Nate Tauscher got the starting nod and tallied eight saves while allowing five goals in three quarters and 2:55 in the fourth. Redshirt freshman Joey Kent came on in relief and played the final 5:05 of the fourth quarter, tallying one save while surrendering one score.

The Bruins won the first quarter against UC Davis, 3-2, and overpowered the Aggies in the second period, 6-1, to take a 9-3 lead into the break. Both teams battled to a 2-2 draw in the third period, but the Bruins dominated the final frame, 5-1, to provide the 16-6 final.

In the game against the Tritons, Chase Dodd and junior Ben Liechty each scored their first hat tricks of the year. Dodd added an assist for a four-way tie in the scoring department with four points. Brinkema (one goal, three assists), Ryder Dodd (two goals, two assists), and redshirt junior Vinnie Merk (one goal, three assists) all finished with four total points.

Tauscher made his third-consecutive start on the year, registering eight saves and three steals while giving up two goals in the first three periods. Kent came on in relief and played the entire fourth quarter, racking up three saves (including a blocked penalty shot) to pitch a shut out in his eight minutes of action.

UCLA, which has not trailed this season, won the first period, 5-1. The Bruins pitched a shutout in the second quarter, 3-0, to build an 8-1 lead by halftime. UCLA won the third quarter, 5-1, to take a 13-2 lead into the final stanza. Another shutout followed in the fourth with UCLA winning the period 5-0 to provide the 18-2 final.

The two teams will face off on Wednesday, Sept. 3, at 3:00 p.m. PT on Overnght.com at Asphalt Green's Upper East Side Campus. From there, UCLA will head to Princeton, N.J., for four games in the Princeton Invitational on Sept. 5-6.
