No. 24 UCLA Caps Unbeaten Weekend with Dominant Sweep of Texas Southern

September 13, 2025 | Women's Volleyball

EL PASO, Texas โ€“ย No. 24 UCLA women's volleyball completed its perfect weekend at the Sun City Classic by downing Texas Southern in straight sets on Saturday morning inside Memorial Gym.
ย
Set scores were 25-4, 25-13, 25-12.
ย
UCLA (4-3) won all nine sets it played at the Sun City Classic, earning convincing sweeps over UTEP, Oral Roberts, and Texas Southern (1-9).
ย
The Bruins' defense was dominant, holding the Lady Tigers to a hitting percentage in the negatives (-.094). This is the first time UCLA has held an opponent to a negative hitting percentage since last season's contest against Prairie View A&M, nearly a year to date on Sept. 12, 2024.
ย
UCLA hit .346 as a team with Cheridyn Leverette leading the way, racking up a game-high 14 kills (.423).
ย
Marianna Singletary continued to dominant at the middle blocker position, slamming down eight kills at a staggering .727 clip. She also sent back a pair of blocks in the contest.
ย
Kate Duffey achieved her first career double-double by notching 31 assists and 10 digs. The Bruin's setter also led the squad with three service aces. Kat Lutz capped her terrific weekend with another double figure dig performance, snuffing out 17.
ย
UCLA dominated the opening set against Texas Southern with a relentless all-around performance, cruising to a 25-4 win while hitting .360 as a team. The Bruins opened with an 8-0 run, fueled by kills from Singletary, Leverette, Carly Hendrickson, and an ace from Duffey. Hendrickson dealt two more aces later in the set, while Briscoe and Duffey teamed up for a block. Eliana Urzua chipped in by putting down two more kills and an ace, and Leverette closed the frame with three straight kills. UCLA's defense was equally impressive, forcing Texas Southern to hit -.214 and just four points in the most lopsided set of the season.
ย
UCLA controlled the second set with a balanced attack and strong net presence, jumping out to an 11-6 lead and forcing a Texas Southern timeout. Multiple Bruins came off the bench to contribute kills, including Anastasija Ivkovic and Zayna Meyer. Duffey added an ace and Leverette closed the set in dominant fashion with three consecutive kills, sealing another convincing set win for the Bruins.
ย
The Bruins promptly wrapped up the match with a 25-12 victory in the final frame. Leverette led the way with six kills in the set, while Singletary added four and Maggie Li chipped in with two. UCLA also tallied three aces, two from Lutz and one from Duffey, and got some important offensive contributions Hendrickson, and Urzua down the stretch to round out a dominant team effort.
ย
UCLA returns to the Golden State for a three-game tournament hosted by Stanford. The first contest takes place on Sept. 19 at 4 p.m. (PT) against Texas State.
