UCLA Sweeps Hawaii to Earn Fifth Straight Win

September 20, 2025 | Women's Volleyball

STANFORD, Calif. โ€“ย UCLA women's volleyball earned its fifth consecutive victory after downing Hawaii in straight sets on Saturday afternoon inside Maples Pavilion.ย
ย
Set scores were 25-12, 27-25, 25-15.
ย
UCLA (6-3) hit .301 as a team to ascend over the .300 mark for the fourth time this season. The Bruins' blocking defense was effective, holding Hawaii (4-6) to a hitting percentage of just .090.
ย
In her UCLA debut, Phekran Kong was exceptional, putting down a game-high 12 kills to finish just one short of her career-high. She hit an extremely efficient .450 and got involved in three blocks on the defensive end to finish with 14.5 points in the contest.
ย
Cheridyn Leverette reached double-digits by knocking down 10 kills at a .231 clip while Marianna Singletary and Eliana Urzua finished with nine kills apiece.
ย
Lola Schumacher anchored UCLA's back row with a team-high 15 digs, continuing her streak of double-digit performances in all six matches she's played this season. At the setter position, Kate Duffey orchestrated the Bruins' offense with poise, matching her career-best with 36 assists.
ย
Phekran Kong made an immediate impact in her UCLA debut, scoring on her first three swings and leading the Bruins with five kills in the opening set. Her early offensive burst helped fuel a 7-0 run as UCLA raced out to a commanding 10-1 lead. Marianna Singletary added an ace, while Eliana Urzua and Cheridyn Leverette chipped in with kills and a block to extend the advantage. Kate Duffey's service pressure and Leverette's net play pushed the margin to 17-5, and UCLA closed the set hitting a blistering .458 as a team. Kong finished the frame with five kills on seven attempts, excelling in her first outing in the Blue and Gold.
ย
UCLA battled through a tense second set that ultimately reached extra points, seizing an early 8-6 lead behind a block from Briscoe and a powerful kill from Singletary. Urzua's tip kill extended the advantage, but Hawaii rallied to tie the frame at 16-all. Kong responded with her eighth kill of the match, following gritty hustle plays from Schumacher and Duffey, and added another to push the Bruins ahead 20-19. UCLA held a 22-20 edge before the Rainbow Wahine surged back to tie and take a 23-22 lead. Leverette delivered a clutch side-out kill, and Singletary answered Hawaii's set point with a thunderous finish to even the score at 24. Singletary and Kong then teamed up for a pivotal block to reach set point, and after Hawaii fought off one, Urzua sealed the set with a decisive kill, giving UCLA the 27-25 win.
ย
Kong opened the third set with her 10thย kill of the match, but Hawaii responded by building 5-3 lead. UCLA answered with a decisive 5-0 run, sparked by kills from Urzua and back-to-back finishes from Leverette, followed by an ace from Urzua to take an 8-5 advantage. Kong added two more key kills to extend the lead to 14-10, and Singletary dropped in an ace to make it 15-10. From there, the Bruins maintained control and cruised to a comfortable set win, closing out the match in straight sets.
ย
UCLA will conclude its nonconference schedule tomorrow when it takes on the hosts, No. 4 Stanford, at 3ย p.m. (PT). The contest will be available for viewing on ACC Network Extra.
