Bruins Fall to No. 4 Stanford in Four

September 21, 2025 | Women's Volleyball

STANFORD, Calif. – UCLA women's volleyball saw its five-game winning streak come to an end on Sunday afternoon when it suffered a four-set defeat to No. 4 Stanford in its finale at Maples Pavilion.

Set scores were 18-25, 25-21, 8-25, 25-16.

UCLA (6-4) bounced back from a slow start with a stellar second-set showing, handing No. 4 Stanford (9-2) its first set loss since Sept. 9 and snapping the Cardinal's 14-set winning streak.

Senior outside hitter Cheridyn Leverette reached double-digit kills for the second straight match, putting down 10 in the contest.

Phekran Kong and Eliana Urzua tallied nine kills apiece while Marianna Singletary impressed on the defensive end with seven total blocks to go along with her three kills.

Setter Kate Duffey dished out 28 assists and snuffed out seven digs.

UCLA started strong in the opening set against Stanford, with Leverette scoring on her first swing and Lola Schumacher delivering an early ace to help build a 4-2 lead. Leverette capped a 3-0 run with a kill to extend the advantage to 9-5, but Stanford responded with a dominant stretch, winning 13 of the next 16 points to surge ahead 18-12. The Bruins struggled to regain momentum, committing 11 attack errors and hitting .000 in the frame, ultimately dropping the set.

UCLA clawed its way through a tightly contested second set, with Kong delivering two early kills to keep the Bruins close in the early stages. Singletary and Kong teamed up for back-to-back blocks, and Brooklyn Briscoe followed with a block and kill to tie the frame at 11-all. After Stanford regained momentum, Urzua soared in from the back row to even the score at 15-15. Duffey's dump kill capped a 3-0 run to give UCLA an 18-17 lead, and the Bruins continued to apply pressure with a Singletary-Kong block and another Kong kill to force a Stanford timeout at 21-19. A challenged call turned Urzua's error into a kill, extending the lead to 23-20, and she sealed the set with a final kill to secure the 25-21 win. Stanford's first set loss since Sept. 9, five matches ago, snapping a 14-set win streak.

Stanford grabbed another early lead in the fourth set, but Leverette's kill trimmed the deficit to 7-5. The Cardinal responded with a strong push to go up 16-10, forcing a UCLA timeout. Despite the Bruins' efforts, Stanford maintained control and closed out the match with a 25-16 win in the fourth and final frame.

UCLA begins its Big Ten campaign on Friday, Sept. 26 at 3 p.m. (PT) when it takes on Ohio State. The contest will be available for viewing on B1G+
