September 05, 2025 | Women's Volleyball
FORT WORTH, Texas -ย Theย No. 19-ranked UCLA women's volleyball team fell in straight sets to No. 24 TCU on Friday night inside Schollmaier Arena.
ย
Set scores were 21-25, 22-25, 23-25.
ย
Every set was a nail-biter, with none decided by more than four points. Despite flashes of brilliance, the Bruins (1-2) were undone by 27 attack errors and nine misfires from the service line, opening the door for the Horned Frogs (2-1) to complete the sweep in the opener of the two-match series.
ย
Cheridyn Leverette led all players with 14 kills and finished just one dig shy of a double-double. The 2024 AVCA All-American has posted double-digit kills in each of the three matches to start the season.
ย
Freshman outside hitter Eliana Urzua continued to make her presence felt, delivering eight kills on a .240 hitting clip in a steady performance. On the defensive end, libero Lola Schumacher anchored the back row with 16 digs, marking her third consecutive match in double figures. Brooklyn Briscoe was dominant at the middle blocker position, racking up eight blocks, including two solo.
ย
TCU opened the match with a quick 3-0 burst, seizing early momentum on its home court. Brooklyn Briscoe responded with three early kills to keep UCLA within reach, and the Bruins surged ahead following a 3-0 run capped by a powerful block from sophomores Kiki Horne and Briscoe. Maggie Li found her rhythm late in the set, delivering back-to-back kills and a service ace to tie the score at 21-all. However, the Horned Frogs closed strong, rattling off four straight points to claim the opening frame. UCLA struggled to find consistency, committing nine attack errors and hitting just .054 in the set.
ย
Attack errors continued to plague the Bruins in the second set, as they committed eight miscues that stalled any offensive momentum. Eliana Urzua and Briscoe teamed up for a pair of blocks, helping UCLA tighten up defensively. Leverette began to find her groove, contributing five kills and a block, but TCU capitalized on a service error on set point to edge out a 25-22 win and take a two-set lead.
ย
UCLA came out firing in the third set, with Leverette and Urzua combining for a flurry of kills to build momentum. Leverette tallied eight of her 14 killsย ย on the night while teaming up with Briscoe for a key block. Urzua caught fire in the final frame, capping a 5-0 run with three straight kills. An emphatic Leverette kill sparked another 4-0 burst to give the Bruins an 18-13 edge, but despite the surge, TCU clawed back with a late rally to erase the deficit and steal the set, 25-23.
