No. 19 UCLA Drops Four-Set Match to No. 24 TCU

September 06, 2025 | Women's Volleyball

FORT WORTH, Texas โ€“ย Theย No. 19-ranked UCLA women's volleyball team dropped a four-set decision to No. 24 TCU on Saturday night inside Schollmaier Arena.
ย
Set scores were 21-25, 19-25, 25-21, and 14-25.
ย
UCLA (1-3) battled through inconsistencies on the offensive end, committing 22 attack errors and finishing with a .138 hitting percentage on the night. TCU (3-1) capitalized on the miscues, riding standout performances from Lauren Murphy (16 kills, .500 hitting) and Evan Hendrix (13 kills, 15 digs) to complete the weekend sweep in the two-match series.
ย
Freshman Eliana Urzua impressed in her first start for the Bruins, collecting a team-high 12 kills and eight digs. Coming up just one kill shy of a double-double was Cheridyn Leverette, tallying 13 digs in addition to her nine kills.
ย
Carly Hendrickson enjoyed a solid performance with eight kills, five digs, and two blocks while Lola Schumacher led UCLA with 18 digs on the defensive end.
ย
UCLA came out aggressive in the opening set, with Maggie Li, Leverette, and Urzua leading a balanced attack. Zayna Meyer and Schumacher each delivered service aces, while Marianna Singletary capitalized on an overpass to help tie the score at 17 following a 3-0 UCLA run. Urzua capped a long rally with an emphatic kill to give the Bruins a 19-18 edge, and a Kate Duffey ace later extended the lead. However, TCU responded with a 4-0 run to reclaim momentum, then closed the set by ultimately winning six of the final seven points to take the opener.
ย
TCU continued to control momentum early with multiple scoring runs, including a 4-0 burst that pushed them ahead 11-7 and forced a UCLA timeout. Despite early kills from Urzua, Li, and Hendrickson, the Bruins struggled to sustain rhythm. A solo block by Briscoe and an ace from Meyer helped UCLA close the gap briefly with a 3-0 run, but TCU answered with another 4-0 surge to regain control. UCLA showed late fight with kills from Marianna Singletary, Meyer, and Leverette (who notched back-to-back points), but the hosts closed out the set 25-19.
ย
UCLA found its rhythm in the third set, opening with a 4-0 run behind kills from Hendrickson and Urzua. The duo stayed hot, combining for multiple kills and a key block with Singletary to build a 16-12 lead. The Bruins dominated at the net, with Singletary and Leverette teaming up for a block and Briscoe adding a late kill. A successful challenge confirmed a Urzua kill at 22-19, crucially swinging the momentum in UCLA's favor. UCLA hit .316 and tallied six blocks to take the frame 25-21 and extend the match.
ย
UCLA will embark on another trip to the Lone Star State for the Sun City Classic in El Paso, Texas. The Bruins' first contest will take place against host UTEP on Sept. 11 at 5 p.m. (PT).
