Stanford, Calif. - No. 17 UCLA could not break through against No. 1 Stanford, allowing two first-half goals and falling to the unbeaten and unscored upon Cardinal by a 3-0 score. 

Former Bruin forward Bella Winn opened the scoring in the 21st minute on a left-footed goal. Winn had scored the opening and game-winning goal for UCLA a year ago against the No. 1 Cardinal.

Just three minutes later, Stanford struck again on a set piece goal, with Brooke Holden heading in a free kick from Saide Leal-Schuman, who also had assisted on Winn's goal. 

The Bruins (1-2-1) had chances against the Cardinal in the first half, but Stanford's defense thwarted each opportunity, including two in the box by Kara Croone. 

Croone had the Bruins' best chances in the second half, stealing the ball in the 72nd minute and firing a shot that was saved by Stanford goalkeeper Rhiannon Stewart. Croone also had an opportunity in the 79th minute after a quick pass ahead from Olivia Woodson. Croone drew Stewart out of the box, but her shot was blocked by a Stanford defender, and Woodson's chip off the rebound was controlled by Stewart. 

The Cardinal (4-0-0) solidified the win with an 82nd minute left-footed goal by Charlotte Kohler. 

Bruin goalkeeper Daphne Nakfoor made eight saves on 18 Stanford shots, one off her career-high of nine, also against the Cardinal. Defender Paloma Daubert made a save of her own, clearing away a hard-angled Winn shot in the 71st minute.

UCLA will next play at Santa Clara on Sunday, Aug. 30 at 1pm.
