LOS ANGELES – Alessio Vasquez has signed a grant-in-aid to attend UCLA and compete for its men’s tennis team, head coach Billy Martin announced Tuesday. Vasquez will enroll ahead of the 2027 winter quarter and participate in the 2027 dual season.

Vasquez joins the Bruins from LSU, where he posted a 44-33 singles record and a 27-24 doubles mark across three seasons. His dual singles decisions were spread across the top five courts and he went a combined 20-12 on Courts 1, 2 and 3. In 2025-26, Vasquez reached career-high ITA rankings of No. 39 singles and No. 45 doubles.

“I’m very excited to have Alessio join our team,” said Martin. “I was fortunate enough to be able to watch him play a few years ago in the NCAA Championships, when we faced LSU in the first round. He played an unbelievably good match against Spencer Johnson and I was so impressed. Now knowing that he’s going to be joining us just adds fuel to our fire and allows us to really even more so compete for an NCAA championship.”

The 2024-25 campaign was a breakout one for Vasquez, whose 15-10 singles showing (12-8 dual) included a pair of late-season victories against top-20 foes. He started by logging a 6-4, 6-1 result over No. 19 Sebastian Gorzny of Texas, earning his first ITA ranking. Elevated to the top court, Vasquez soon after downed defending NCAA singles champion and 14^th-ranked Filip Planinsek of Arkansas 6-4, 6-1. Vasquez was subsequently named the ITA Southern Region’s Player to Watch. He also received All-SEC Second Team acclaim.

Vasquez in 2025 also competed for his home country of Germany at the World University Games, the world’s second-largest Olympic sports event, in Rhine-Ruhr, Germany. The Berlin native advanced through the field of 64 to reach the semifinals, beating Virginia’s 2026 ITA National Player of the Year Dylan Dietrich (Switzerland) in a three-set quarterfinal.

As a freshman, Vasquez finished with an 18-12 singles record. In the SEC Championship second round, he provided the deciding point in a thrilling 4-3 upset of No. 14 Texas A&M. Vasquez outlasted No. 38 JC Roddick 4-6, 7-5, 7-6(8) with all eyes on their Court 2 matchup.

Vasquez has also picked up some accolades away from the court. He was named to the First-Year SEC Academic Honor Roll in 2023-24 and collected SEC Spring Academic Honor Roll recognition each of the following two years. Vasquez attended Sportschule im Olympiapark - Poelchau-Schule in Berlin before enrolling at LSU.
