LOGAN, Utah – The UCLA women’s volleyball team opened its three‑match Utah road swing with a convincing sweep of Utah State on Wednesday night inside Kirby Court at the Wayne Estes Center.
Set scores were 25-20, 25-22, 25-20.
The Bruins (5-1) hit .253, posted nine team blocks, and leaned on a balanced attack led by Brooke Harwood’s 11 kills (.474) and Marianna Singletary’s eight kills and five blocks.
This marks UCLA’s third consecutive victory via the sweep.
Harwood delivered one of UCLA’s most complete outings of the season, piling up 11 kills at .474 with four blocks, repeatedly bailing the Bruins out of tight moments and stabilizing the offense during long rallies. Singletary was equally impactful, finishing with eight kills and five blocks, including several momentum‑shifting stuffs that flipped points in all three sets.
Ava Utterback added a steady seven kills, while Eliana Urzua chipped in seven kills and four blocks, thriving in transition during UCLA’s biggest scoring runs.
Kate Duffey sparked the attack off the bench, handing out 14 assists, adding two kills, and engineering multiple late‑set scoring pushes. Ava Sarafa contributed 13 assists, a perfect hitting line, and two blocks in her rotations, giving UCLA consistent tempo and balance. In the back row, Lola Schumacher anchored the defense with 10 digs, and Vivian Hickman added five digs while helping UCLA build early leads with her serve pressure.
Utah State’s (0-6) Addy Cook led the Aggies with 13 kills.
UCLA blitzed the Aggies from the opening serve, racing out to a 7-0 lead behind Hickman’s serving run, which included an ace and four straight Utah State attack errors, three of them blocked by Harwood. Harwood then added a transition kill to cap the run. Utah State chipped back behind Addy Cook, but UCLA’s offense stayed steady when Sarafa delivered a service ace to push the lead to 12-3, and Singletary added two kills in the middle of the frame. Utah State made a late push to close within 22-19, but Sakura Codling’s ace gave UCLA set point, and an Ava Nakai attack error sealed the opener.
The second set swung wildly, with Utah State using a six‑point serving run from Ava Napierski, including two aces, to build a 9-5 lead. UCLA responded with a composed counterpunch when Singletary terminated in transition, Sarafa and Singletary combined for a block, and Harwood hammered a right‑side kill to tie the frame at 11-11. Utah State surged again behind Cook, but UCLA’s depth took over late. Duffey, entering the contest at the setter position, delivered back‑to‑back kills to push UCLA ahead 18-17, then teamed with Singletary and Urzua for a three‑person block that made it 22-19. Harwood closed the set with a cross‑court kill from Duffey to secure the 25-22 win.
UCLA controlled the third set from start to finish, overcoming early side‑outs and a brief Utah State surge to close out the sweep 25-20. After Napierski’s ace put the Aggies up 2-1, the Bruins responded with an Urzua kill and a Singletary-Urzua block to regain the lead, then stacked points behind Mija Bendziute’s serve as Utterback and Harwood each terminated in transition to make it 9-5. Utah State briefly closed the gap with consecutive Sami Blackett kills and a block, but Duffey steadied UCLA with a kill and a string of clean connections that pushed the margin back to 12-9. From there, the Bruins broke the frame open when Bendziute and Singletary added another block and Hickman’s serving run delivered a pair of kills from Utterback and Harwood to stretch the lead to 22-15. Utah State made one last push behind Napierski and Ava Gibbs, trimming the deficit to 24-20, but Cook’s final attack sailed long, sealing the set and the sweep for UCLA.
The Bruins will head to Provo, Utah on Friday, Sept. 11 for a 5:30 p.m. (PT) matchup against BYU. The contest will be available for viewing on ESPN+.
