EUGENE, Ore. – The UCLA men's basketball team defeated Oregon, 73-57, at Matthew Knight Arena on Wednesday night, marking the Bruins' third straight Big Ten victory.
UCLA (15-6, 7-3 Big Ten) earned their third win at Oregon's Matthew Knight Arena in their last four meetings there against Oregon (8-13, 1-9 Big Ten).
Four Bruins scored in double figures in the win. Tyler Bilodeau finished with a team-leading 18 points, while Donovan Dent scored 15 points, Eric Dailey Jr. had 14 and Trent Perry totaled 12. UCLA shot 7-for-18 from 3-point range and a season-low 39.7 percent overall from the field (23-for-58).
Eleven of Dent's 15 points came in the first 10 minutes of the second half. The point guard from Riverside, Calif., added four assists, three rebounds and a steal. Dailey Jr. grabbed a team-high 11 rebounds for his second double-double of the season, his first double-double since a win over Sacramento State on Nov. 18.
After going scoreless in the game's first 19 minutes of the game, Dent recorded four points in the final 52 seconds of the first half and proceeded to score or assist on 13 of UCLA's first 17 points of the second half.
Dent capped an 8-0 Bruins run by dishing an alley-oop dunk to Dailey Jr. to push UCLA's lead to its largest of the night at 44-24 at the 16:40 mark of the second period. The Ducks cut the deficit to 10 points twice halfway through the second half before Dent answered with a flurry of seven points coming off a layup, 3-pointer and pair of free throws.
Sophomore guard Trent Perry helped ice the game by scoring all 12 of his points in the game's final 10 minutes. He has now scored in double digits in eight of his last 10 games.
"Defensively, our game plan, our guys did a pretty good job," said Mick Cronin, The Michael Price Family UCLA Men's Head Basketball Coach. "We overcame a below average offensive performance, for us. We are a team that shoots almost 50 percent from the field. We haven't shot 39 percent, I don't remember the last time we shot under 40 percent, to be honest with you, but give them some credit. It's the dog days here, and it's here, we're playing every three days. Everybody is going through it in the Big Ten. You're not going to be at your best every night. Everybody's fighting through injuries."
As a team, UCLA finished 20 for 23 at the free throw line, raising the Bruins' season free throw percentage to 75.4 percent. Bilodeau paced the Bruins from the free throw line at Oregon, connecting on 9-of-11 attempts. Oregon made 6-of-9 free throws.
The Ducks were led by forward Kwame Evans Jr. who scored a game-high 24 points on 9-of-18 shooting and recorded eight rebounds. Oregon attempted 32 of its 59 shots from beyond the arc, making 9 of those 32 long-range attempts (28.1 percent).
Bilodeau and Dailey Jr. each recorded 10 points in the first half, powering the Bruins to a 36-22 lead entering the break. Dailey Jr. also pulled down a team-high seven rebounds. Junior forward/center Xavier Booker did not miss a shot attempt in the first half, contributing seven points, including a 3-pointer, five rebounds, two blocks and a steal.
Five of Bilodeau's 10 first-half points came from the free throw line where he was 5-of-6. As a team, UCLA was 8-of-10 at the charity stripe while Oregon was 2-of-4. The Ducks waited until the 3:57 mark of the opening period before drawing a shooting foul to make their first trip to the free throw line.
UCLA limited Oregon to 25.0 percent shooting in the first half, as the Ducks made just 8 of 32 field goals.
