LOS ANGELES - In a top 10 matchup on Saturday afternoon, No. 4 UCLA captured a 197.725-196.975 victory over No. 9 Michigan in front of a season-high crowd of 10,032.ย
Jordan Chiles shook off illness to score her fourth consecutive perfect 10 on floor exercise, the fifth-straight week she has scored a 10. She also won the all-around for the fifth-straight meet, scoring 39.625. The freshman class also shined for the Bruins, totaling five scores of 9.900 or higher. Tiana Sumanasekera scored three 9.900s and earned a career-high all-around score of 39.475. Nola Matthews tied for second place on uneven bars with a career-high 9.925, and Ashlee Sullivan contributed three scores of 9.850 or higher, including a 9.900 on uneven bars.ย
UCLA (9-2, 5-0 in the Big Ten) began the meet with a 49.225 on vault, with Sumanasekera opening the meet with a career-best 9.900, her second in as many weeks. Katelyn Rosen stuck her Yurchenko 1.5 and scored 9.875 to tie her season-best. But Michigan took the early lead with a 49.325 on uneven bars, thanks to a meet-winning 9.950 by Sophie Parenti.ย
The Bruins regained the lead in the second rotation after scoring 49.500 on uneven bars, sticking all six of their dismounts. Matthews and Chiles led the way with scores of 9.925. Sumanasekera tied her career-high with a 9.900, and Sullivan added a 9.900 of her own, while Sydney Barros and Ciena Alipio each scored 9.850. Michigan dropped half a point behind the Bruins after scoring just 48.925 on vault, counting three scores in the 9.7s.ย
Michigan gained a little bit of ground in the third rotation with a 49.475 on floor exercise, as UCLA scored 49.350 on balance beam. Barros and Alipio led the team with scores of 9.900, Chiles added a 9.875, and Rosen scored a leadoff 9.850. ย
Up by .350 going into floor exercise in the final rotation, the Bruins pulled away with a 49.650. Rosen led off with a 9.900, and Alipio followed with a career-best 9.950. Alipio stuck each of her tumbling passes cold and received a perfect 10 from one judge. Barros and Sumanasekera followed with scores of 9.900, and Sullivan recorded a 9.875. Chiles closed the meet with another perfect score, her 10th career 10 on floor and 16th career 10 overall. ย ย
"I was just so impressed with how she came out and was so intentional with everything," said The R.C. Rothman UCLA Head Gymnastics Coach Janelle McDonald about Chiles. "She really brought the energy up for her team in those little moments that we needed to flip the energy. For her to just go out on floor and do it again was just incredible. I think it's a testament to the work she puts in and the heart she has for this team."
UCLA will next compete at Illinois on Sunday, Feb. 22 at 2pm at the State Farm Center.ย
