No. 1 UCLA Completes Sweep with 14-4 Run-Rule Win Over Maryland
March 22, 2026 | Baseball
The Bruins (21-2, 9-0 Big Ten) extended their winning streak to 15 games and recorded their third straight conference sweep, maintaining the best league start in program history.
Mulivai Levu led the way offensively with a team-high three hits as part of UCLA's 11-hit outburst. The first baseman reached base five times, scored twice, and drove in a pair.
Dean West and Roch Cholowsky each turned in multi-hit performances, while Roman Martin, Payton Brennan, Dominic Cadiz, Will Gasparino, and Trey Gudoy all added hits in the victory.
Justin Lee (1-0) earned his first win of the season after firing 1.2 scoreless innings and striking out two. Landon Stump got the start for UCLA, allowing two earned runs over 4.1 innings of work.
UCLA jumped out to an early lead, pushing three runs across in the bottom of the first. West and Levu opened the inning with singles to set the stage for Martin, who blasted a triple into the right-center gap to score both runners, marking his third straight game with an RBI hit in his first plate appearance. Brennan followed with a productive groundout to bring Martin home and cap the three-run frame.
The Bruins added three more in the second, loading the bases on a walk and a pair of hit-by-pitches before West delivered his second hit of the day to drive in the first run of the frame. Levu followed with a knock of his own, shooting a line drive up the middle to bring home two more.
In the third, UCLA capitalized on a two-out throwing error that allowed Cashel Dugger to move into scoring position. Gudoy made it count, lacing a two-out single into right to stretch the lead to seven.
The Terrapins got a run back in the fourth when Ryan Costello smacked a solo home run for Stump's first blemish of the afternoon. Maryland used a pair of hits to add another in the fifth, but Justin Lee would come on and induce an inning-ending 4-6-3 double play with the first pitch of his outing to limit further damage.
The Bruins pushed the lead to nine with a four-run outburst in the sixth. Two hit-by-pitches and a walk loaded the bases for Gasparino, who punched an RBI single to center. A wild pitch then allowed Martin to score, and Brennan raced home from third, narrowly beating the tag to keep the inning alive. Call capped the frame with a sacrifice fly to right, completing the four-run surge.
Jordan Crosland's solo shot in the seventh put Maryland on the board, and the Terrapins added another run in the eighth, but UCLA sealed it in the home half with a three-run surge that pushed the margin to 10 and invoked the mercy rule. Call and West drew back-to-back walks, Cholowsky drove in Call with an infield single, then Cadiz, stepping in for his first at-bat of the day, ended it with a base hit through the right side to score both runners and complete the sweep.
The Bruins will complete their nine-game homestand with a Tuesday night contest against Loyola Marymount on Tuesday, March 24 at 6 p.m. PT. Live coverage will be available on B1G+
