Women's Water Polo Beats LMU on Senior Day
March 29, 2026 | Women's Water Polo
LOS ANGELES โ The third-ranked UCLA women's water polo team secured a 9-5 win against No. 7 LMU Sunday in the Bruins' home finale. For the second time in as many days, UCLA held an opponent to its season-low goal total (LMU also scored five against Long Beach State on Jan. 31).
The Bruins (18-2) celebrated their 11 senior student-athletes after the game. Of those seniors, four scored goals. Bia Mantellato and Taylor Smith registered hat tricks, scoring three apiece. Junior Lauren Steele logged nine saves for UCLA. Chelsea Isaac led the Lions (21-4) with two goals. Madison Searle turned away nine Bruin shots.
Senior Anna Pearson got scoring underway at 7:12 of the initial frame. Smith followed with her first 44 seconds later. LMU got on the scoreboard just shy of the quarter's midway point, but Mantellato answered shortly after. The Lions closed out the opening eight minutes by capitalizing on a six-on-five opportunity.
Searle (three) and Steele (two) combined for five saves in the second quarter, which saw just one goal scored. Mantellato struck with 5:35 left, giving UCLA a 4-2 halftime lead.
The third quarter was all Bruins. Elektra Urbatsch found the back of the net with just under six minutes left for the lone non-senior goal. Smith added two more for her 11th hat trick of the season and Lineback took advantage of a power play. UCLA led by a game-high six goals, 8-2, after three.
LMU scored three consecutive goals, including one on a penalty shot, to start the fourth quarter. It was ultimately Mantellato putting a stamp on the victory, though, capping her eighth hat trick of the campaign and third in four games.
The Bruins complete their regular season Saturday, April 4 at current No. 1 USC. Play from Uytengsu Aquatics Center begins at 1 p.m. PT. The Trojans sit on top of the MPSF standings with a 5-0 record. UCLA and Stanford are tied at 4-1.
