March 31, 2026 | Baseball
IRVINE, Calif. โ The No. 1-ranked UCLA baseball team extended its winning streak to 20 games with a convincing 9-1 victory over UC Irvine on Tuesday night at Cicerone Field.
ย
The Bruins (26-2, 12-0 Big Ten) are now just two wins shy of matching the program record of 22 straight, set in 2010 to open the season. The win also marks UCLA's first road victory at UC Irvine since 2019.
ย
Eight of nine starters recorded a hit, with Roman Martin, Will Gasparino, and Kasen Khansarinia leading the way with multi-hit performances. Roch Cholowsky drove in two during the four-run seventh, and Dean West paced the Bruins with a pair of runs scored, adding a walk and a hit on the night.
ย
UCLA used six pitchers in the win, with Angel Cervantes (2-0) earning his second victory after tossing two scoreless innings and striking out two in his start.
ย
Chris Grothues struck out five over two perfect frames, and Zach Strickland retired all six batters he faced. Elai Iwanaga closed it out with a scoreless ninth.
ย
UCLA jumped ahead early with a three-run burst in the top of the first, doing the damage on just one hit. West opened the game with a sharp single up the middle, followed by a hit-by-pitch to Cholowsky and a walk to Mulivai Levu to load the bases. Martin was then plunked to force in the first run, and Payton Brennan added another with a groundout to first. Levu capped the inning moments later, sliding in under the tag on a wild pitch to make a three-run advantage.
ย
After Cervantes delivered two scoreless frames, UC Irvine broke through in the third by pairing a double and a single to plate a run.
ย
The Bruins answered in the fifth. Martin opened the inning with a double, and Gasparino brought him home with an RBI groundout to restore the three-run cushion.
ย
UCLA stretched the lead in the seventh, breaking the game open with a four-run, four-hit rally. Gasparino and Phoenix Call sparked the inning with back-to-back infield singles, and Khansarinia followed with a solid knock to center to load the bases. West worked a walk to force in the first run, and Cholowsky ripped a base hit through the left side to drive in two more. Levu finished the four-run inning with a deep sacrifice fly to right, pushing the Bruins' lead to seven.
ย
UCLA tacked on another run in the eighth, manufacturing it without a hit as Aidan Espinoza brought Brennan home with a groundout.
ย
Strickland and Iwanaga pitched two scoreless innings to finish off the contest, clinching UCLA's 20th straight win.
