Women's Tennis Advances to Big Ten Tourney Semifinals

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- The fourth-seeded UCLA women's tennis team bounced back from an early deficit to beat No. 5 seed Washington 4-1 in Big Ten Tournament quarterfinal-round action Friday at Auer Tennis Complex. The Bruins advance to face No. 1 seed and host Ohio State in Saturday's first semifinal, with play scheduled to begin at 8 a.m. PT.
Kate Fakih clinched the result for UCLA (16-6) with its fourth consecutive straight-set singles win. Also prevailing were Olivia Center, Ahmani Guichard and Anne-Christine Lutkemeyer. The Huskies had reached the round with a 4-1 victory against No. 12 seed Penn State Thursday.
Washington claimed the doubles point without a loss. Reece Carter/Jermine Sherif struck first, taking down Guichard/Kayla Chung by a 6-4 margin on Court 3. Karolina Kozakova/Erika Matsuda then beat Lutkemeyer/Mayu Crossley 6-3 in clinching fashion on Court 2.
The Bruins claimed four singles first sets to kickoff their comeback. Guichard held on in her second after a dominant first, beating Kozakova 6-0, 6-4 to tie the score.
No. 18 Lutkemeyer rolled against No. Carter on the top court, delivering a 6-4, 6-1 win that gave UCLA its first lead of the day. It was extended by Center, who on Court 5 took down Marie Weissheim 6-1, 6-4.
Faced with a deuce point that could put the match back on serve, Fakih closed out Alexia Jacobs on Court 3. The 6-3, 6-3 decision was Fakih's second clincher of the season and eighth of her career.
