May 15, 2026 | Softball
The Bruins (48-8) tied the game in the bottom of the seventh on a two-run home run by freshman Jolyna Lamar and won it on a bases-loaded sacrifice fly by redshirt freshman Aleena Garcia to score sophomore Rylee Slimp.ย

"I told the Bruins earlier that no game is decided in any one inning, and tonight could not have been a better example of that," said The Shelly Carlin UCLA Head Softball Coach Kelly Inouye-Perez. "That was a great team, and they competed, but the opportunity for us to be able to have the last punch ... we were better at the end. I'm very proud of my Bruins. We believed, from my youngest Bruin, to the oldest Bruin. Just quality, clutch at-bats. I'm not surprised because they have strong belief."
UCLA moves on to the winner's bracket to face South Carolina, a 7-4 winner over Cal State Fullerton earlier in the day. The Bruins and Gamecocks will play at 2pm PT on Saturday, while the Lancers and Titans play at 4:30pm PT in an elimination game. ย ย
The Bruins had led in the game 7-1 after a two-run home run by senior Jordan Woolery in the first inning and five runs in the third after a three-run home run by Garcia and a two-run shot by Soo-Jin Berry. But California Baptist answered in the fifth with a 10-run onslaught to take the lead.ย
The Lancers (43-18) sent 11 consecutive batters to the plate before recording an out. Their first four runs of the inning came via walk, two infield singles and a fielder's choice and error. A bases-clearing double by Ashlee Annet gave California Baptist its first lead, 8-7. Back-to-back home runs by Victoria Macias, her second of the day, and Sydney Peter increased the lead to 11-7 before the Bruins stopped the bleeding.ย
Still, UCLA chipped away at the lead, loading the bases in the bottom of the fifth and sixth innings. Although the Bruins left the bases loaded in the fifth, they got two runs back in the sixth on a fielder's choice by freshman Bri Alejandre and an infield single by sophomore Kaniya Bragg to cut the lead to 11-9.ย
In the bottom of the seventh, Berry reached base with her third hit of the game before No. 9 batter Lamar clubbed the game-tying home run. A single by Slimp and a walk to Megan Grant put the winning run in scoring position for Woolery, and the Big Ten Player of the Year drew a four-pitch walk to load the bases with one out. Garcia came through with the walk-off sacrifice fly to deep right field to score Slimp from third.ย

Sophomore Brynne Nally earned the win after pitching the final 2.2 innings in relief. She gave up just one run and recorded two strikeouts.
"I think our most proud moment, separate from the offense, was Brynne Nally coming in and being able to stop the bleeding," said Inouye-Perez. "I think that was a really big pick-me-up for all of us, knowing that we work both sides - defense, offense. And bottom line, this team is going to compete down to the last pitch."
