UCLA Has Record Night in 11-0 Rout of Arkansas at WCWS
OKLAHOMA CITY – No. 8 seed UCLA softball shut out No. 2 seed Arkansas, 11-0, in an elimination game at the Women's College World Series on Friday evening at Devon Park.
The Bruins (53-9) broke the game open with a nine-run second inning, tied for the second-most runs scored in a single inning in WCWS history. All nine UCLA starters crossed the plate during the frame.
"We made a commitment to be able to come in and slow the game down, stick to our training of having discipline at the plate so you can get a good cut on a pitch," said Kelly Inouye-Perez, The Shelly Carlin UCLA Head Softball Coach. "They have simplified it to that point, which is why the home runs have come, and I've reminded them of that. We're not trying to hit home runs, we're trying to have quality at-bats. And as Coach Lisa always tells all of them, if you swing at strikes, you increase your chances of getting a good hit and squaring a ball up greatly."
Senior Megan Grant was one of three Bruins to homer in the second inning. Her solo shot to center field extended her NCAA single-season record to 42 home runs and established a new UCLA career record with 91, surpassing Stacey Nuveman's mark that had stood since 2002.
The victory marked the largest shutout win in UCLA's WCWS history.
The Bruins finished with four home runs from four different players, tying a WCWS single-game record. UCLA's four long balls are tied for the second-most in a WCWS game and matched the program record at the event, previously accomplished three times, most recently against Oklahoma in 2019.
UCLA increased its NCAA-record home run total to 206 this season.
In the circle, Taylor Tinsley tossed UCLA's 63rd shutout in WCWS history. The right-hander scattered three hits and two walks across five scoreless innings on 61 pitches to earn her fourth complete-game shutout against a ranked opponent in her career.
Three Bruins hit their first career home runs at the WCWS: redshirt freshman Aleena Garcia, junior Soo-Jin Berry and freshman Jolyna Lamar. Garcia sparked UCLA's second-inning outburst with a leadoff homer on the first pitch she saw.
Berry followed later in the inning with a three-run blast, driving in Kaniya Bragg and Alexis Ramirez after Bragg was hit by a pitch and Ramirez singled.
Lamar accounted for the game's final run with a solo home run to right field, recording her first career WCWS hit.
