Staton enters his first year with the Bruins as a volunteer decathlon coach after competing for UCLA from 2000-2004. As an athlete, Staton competed at the NCAA Outdoor Championships in 2004 where he placed 18th with a score of 7,040 points. His best score of 7,313 points ranks eighth all-time in UCLA history. He graduated with a degree in Psychology.
