UCLA is off to best Pac-10 start ever.

This Week — Kathy Olivier's UCLA (12-6, 7-2) women's basketball team, winners of seven of the last eight and 10 of the last 12 games, is off to its best Pac-10 start ever at 7-2, including a Pac-10 best 5-0 on the road and will host the Oregon schools. After opening the season with three straight losses, the Bruins have gone 12-3 with losses to #5 North Carolina, #6 Stanford and #8 Arizona (AP rankings).
Oregon (11-6, 7-2) which bested Oregon State last week in Corvallis, 80-57, will play at Pauley Pavilion on Friday at 7:30. OSU (6-12, 1-8) will play at USC on Friday before coming to Westwood on Sunday for a 2 p.m. contest.
Radio — The UO game will be radio broadcast live on KIEV 870 am at 7:30 p.m. on Friday. The OSU game is live on KYPA 1230 am at 2 p.m. Sunday.
UCLA (12-6, 7-2) Probable Starters —
A Look at UCLA — UCLA's 7-2 Pac-10 record is its best first-half Pac-10 mark ever and surpasses 6-3 starts in 1991-92, 1989-90, 1987-88. The road sweep of the Oregon schools earlier this season was the first by the Bruins since they swept the Washington schools in the 1993-94 season.
One of the big reasons for the Bruin success has been the consistent play of point guard Erica Gomez, who has averaged 6.2 assists (81/13 g) per contest over the last 12 games after starting the season with a 3.6 mark in the first five games. In addition, center Janae Hubbard has averaged 11.8 points (142)/6.8 rebounds (82) in wins and 7.5 points/3.2 rebounds in losses. This season, the Bruin bench has outscored all but three opponents (St. Mary's, Duke and Stanford) and on the season has averaged 28.2 points (508) per game to the opponent's 20.2 points (363) per game. Only one team has shot over 50% vs. the Bruins this season, Notre Dame hit 30-57 fg for .526 on 11/30/97.

A Look at UO — The Ducks are coached by Jody Runge (5th season). Oregon has gone to the NCAA tournament the past four seasons.
The Series with UO — The series is tied at 13-13 and Oregon has won eight of the last 10 meetings. UCLA won the first meeting of the season, 80-75, in Eugene on 1/10/98. Maylana Martin had 27 points and 12 rebounds to pace the Bruins to the road win.

Head Coach Kathy Olivier — Now in her fifth season as UCLA head coach, Kathy Olivier has steadily built the program to reflect her own positive, upbeat and outgoing personality. This season, she takes the floor with a team headed by the Pac-10 conference’s last two Freshmen of the Year, forward Maylana Martin (1996-97) and point guard Erica Gomez (1995-96).
In her seven seasons as an assistant, the team enjoyed five winning seasons and reached the NCAA Tournament in two of the final four years. In 1991-92, the Bruins compiled a record of 21-10 and reached the NCAA Sweet 16. This past season, UCLA continued its streak of being the only team in the Pac-10 to have at least one player named to the all-conference squad in each of the league’s 11 years, all seasons with Olivier on staff.
Jan. 31 - UCLA 76, Washington State 70 — UCLA rallied from a 19-point second half deficit to rally past host Washington State, 76-70, and complete the first half of Pac-10 play with a best-ever 7-2 mark and a perfect 5-0 road record.Marie Philman who battled foul trouble throughout the game scored six of her 12 second-half points in the last 40 seconds of the game to key the rally. UCLA trailed 49-30 with 17:20 to play and by as much as nine points with 3:39 to play. A jump shot by Philman with 1:07 to play tied the score at 67 all. Her layin with 39 seconds to play gave UCLA its first lead since the opening minutes of the game at 69-67. Her free throws in the last 15 seconds helped to ice the agme after WSU had narrowed the margin to 73-70 with 17 seconds to play. Maylana Martin had her sixth double-double of the season to place UCLA with 24 points and 10 rebounds.
Jan. 29 - UCLA 80, Washington 59 — UCLA shot the lights out in the first half (17-24, .708) and took an insurmountable 42-20 halftime lead over the 18th-ranked Huskies, which never recovered and lost 80-59. The Bruins finished the game with a season-high field goal percentage of 56.9%, while Washington shot a lowly 28.6%. After the lead see-sawed back and forth between the two teams, the Bruins took the lead for good at the 11:55 mark when Melanie Pearson hit an 18 foot jumper. UCLA used a 20-2 run to close the first half and held the Huskies to just four points in the last 8:20 of the half. The Bruins extended the lead to as much as 29 points twice in the second half. Janae Hubbard led the Bruins with 12 points. Pearson (11) and Maylana Martin (10) also scored in double figures.
Jan. 23 - UCLA 68, USC 64 — The Bruins rallied to post their first win at USC since March of 1991, 68-64. After being shut out in a first half which saw the Bruins trail 38-30 at intermission, Maylana Martin rallied the Bruins with 14 points and 8 rebounds in a strong second half of play. UCLA took its first lead of the half at 48-47on a pair of free throws by Marie Philman who poured in a team-high 17 for the Bruins. UCLA led 65-62 when Janae Hubbard grabbed the rebound of a missed Bruin free throw attempt and scored to make it 67-62 with 49 seconds to play. A USC basket made it 67-64 with 41 seconds to play. The Trojans then took possession after a Bruin turnover with 23 seconds to play but missed a three-point shot and fouled Erica Gomez on the rebound. Gomez sank the second of two free throw attemps to ice the game for UCLA with two seconds remaining.
Jan. 18 - UCLA 70, Stanford 75 — A Pauley Pavilion regular season record crown of 5,662 saw 11th ranked Stanford halt a Bruin four-game win streak by handing UCLA a 75-70 decision. After Stanford had led by as many as 11 points early in the second half, UCLA gradually whittled the margin down and took the lead on a Melanie Pearson three-point shot at 59-57 with 6:16 to go. It would be UCLA's only lead of the half . UCLA cut the margin back to one at 69-68 with 1:44 to play but missed its next two shots from the field and Stanford added a pair of free throws to boost the margin to 71-68. Two missed free throws cost the Bruins and when Stanford hit two charity tosses of its own it led 73-68 with 30 seconds to play. On the next UCLA possession, the Bruins missed the first two field attempts before Tawana Grimes' offensive rebound basket with four seconds to play made it 73-70 Stanford. The Cardinal was fouled on the inbounds play and made both free throw attempts for the final margin of the game. Stanford finished the game by converting its final 14 straight free throws. Maylana Martin led UCLA with 17 points and Erica Gomez added 15 points and five assists.
Jan. 16 - UCLA 74, Cal 53 — The Bruins continued thier winning ways with a 74-53 decision over Cal and now have won seven of the last eight games. Both teams started slowly and UCLA enjoyed a 30-28 lead at the half. The Bruins came out strong to begin the second half and notched 12 of the first 14 points of the period to make it 42-30 about five minutes in and coasted home with a fourth straight Pac-10 win. Erica Gomez led UCLA with a season-high 14 points and added nine assists. Maylana Martin (13), Marie Philman (12) and Carly Funicello (12) made it four Bruins in double figures.
Jan. 10 - UCLA 80, Oregon 75 — The Bruins scored the last 11 points of the first half to take a 43-33 halftime lead and held off the homestanding Ducks, 80-75. Neither team had led by more than four points and there had been eight lead changes before the late Bruin run. UCLA still led by 10, 60-50, at the 11:54 mark before Oregon staged a rally of its own to tie the score at 62-each with 8:14 remaining. The Bruins quickly regained the upper hand by scoring six of the next seven points in the game and still led 78-71 with 52 seconds to go. Oregon sandwiched a basket and a pair of free throws around Bruin turnovers to close to 78-75 with 11 second to play. Erica Gomez then hit both ends of a one-and-one free throw opportunity to ice the game.
Jan. 8 - UCLA 76, Oregon State 72 — Maylana Martin scored 10 of her 16 points in the second half as UCLA rallied from a 15-point halftime deficit to beat host Oregon Sate, 76-72. UCLA trailed 41-26 at halftime, but used a 17-2 run midway through the second half to take the lead.. UCLA was behind 60-51 at the 10:12 mark of the second half before outscoring the Beavers 17-2 to take a 68-62 advantage at the 3:45 mark.Martin's basket with 5:21 to play had put the Bruins ahead for good at 63-62.OSU managed to get as close as two points in the final 20 seconds, at 74-72, but could not convert. Martin then nailed a pair of free throws with 1.9 seconds to play to seal the win.
Jan. 4 - UCLA 95, Arizona State 73 — UCLA evened its Pac-10 record at 1-1, by using a 61 point second half to power past ASU, 95-73 before 1,064 fans in Pauley Pavilion. Melanie Pearson, one of four Bruins in double figures, keyed the second half attack by scoring 14 of her 18 points in the final 20 minutes. In addition, the sophomore guard scored nine of UCLA 's 16 points in a 16-5 run which moved the Bruins from a 50-44 lead at 13:30 to 66-49 at 9:25 to play. UCLA went on to lead by as many as 28 points, 90-62, at the 3:23 mark before settling for the final 95-73 margin.
Jan. 2 - Arizona 82, UCLA 71 — UCLA dropped its Pac-10 opener to 8th-ranked (USA Today) Arizona, 82-71 in Pauley Pavilion. The Bruins, who led by as many as seven, 27-20, took a 42-40 advantage into the locker room, but watched the lead disappear behind poor shooting (28% in second half) and foul trouble. Maylana Martin picked up her fourth foul at the 10:29 mark of the game with the score knotted at 55-each. Arizona proceeded to outscore the Bruins 15-4 before Martin returned to the lineup. Martin led UCLA with 17 points and nine rebounds. Marie Philman (13), Melanie Pearson (11) and Aisha Veasley (11) also were in double digits for the Bruins.
Dec. 28 - UCLA 88, Seton Hall 58 — UCLA won its fifth game in the last six outings with a 88-58 victory over Seton Hall. The Bruins used a 15-0 run midway through the first half to break open the game and improve their record to 5-4. UCLA enjoyed a 13-10 lead at the 16:01 mark and expanded it to 28-10 at 12:37 on their way to a 46-28 halftime lead and never looked back. Melanie Pearson led three UCLA players in double digits with 15 points. Bruin defense forced 33 Pirate turnovers and held SH to just .412 shooting.
Dec. 27 - UCLA 96, Rutgers 93 ot — Melanie Pearson scored 10 of her 26 points in overtime to lead the Bruins to a 96-93 win over Rutgers in the Pac-10 Big East Conference Challenge. UCLA began its rally from 16 points down with less than two minutes to play in the first half. Rutgers led 43-27 before a Erica Gomez three-point shot sparked the Bruins on a 7-0 run to close the half. The Kinghts upped their lead to 12, 56-44, with 15:20 to play before the Bruins mounted their comeback. A Maylana Martin layup gave UCLA the lead at 60-58 with 8:54 to go and the game stayed close from there. A pair of Martin free throws in the final 24 seconds tied the game at 74. Pearson then took over the game in the extra period. Janae Hubbard recorded her third career double-double for UCLA with 18 points and 11 boards.
Dec. 20 - UCLA 93, Duke 83 — The Bruins led from start to finish in handing #17 Duke a 93-83 loss in Durham. Maylana Martin and Melanie Pearson delivered a one-two punch to the Blue Devils. Martin had 27 points and 10 rebounds and Pearson added 22 more points, including five made three-point shots. The sophomore duo combined to make 17-26 shots, pull down 13 boards, hand out seven assists and make nine steals.
Dec. 18 - UCLA 78, North Carolina 82 ot — The fifth- ranked Tar Heels used a furious second half rally to send the game into an extra period and then defeated the Bruins 82-78 in overtime. UCLA led 39-27 at the half and 60-47 with 7:25 to play before UNC staged its rally. Maylana Martin registered her second double-double of the season with 13 points and 10 rebounds. Melanie Pearson came off the bench to hit 8-12 shots, including all five three-point shots and both free throw attempts, to pace the Bruins with 23 points.
A sophomore has led UCLA in scoring in each game this season.
