USA Baseball Invites UCLA Pitchers Jon Brandt and Josh Karp to National Team Training Camp Sophomore RHP Jon Brandt and freshman RHP Josh Karp have been invited to participate in the summer camp for the 1999 USA Baseball National Team, contact Jim Street announced today. Brandt and Karp received two of the first 33 college baseball player invitations to attend USA Baseball's summer camp tentatively scheduled to open June 8 at Hi Corbett Field in Tucson, AZ, home of USA Baseball and spring training home of the Colorado Rockies.
Brandt, a sophomore from Palo Alto, CA has established himself of as the ace of the '99 UCLA pitching staff. He owns a team-best 7-3 record this season with a 4.36 ERA and 99 strikeouts in 95.0 IP. On February 12, Brandt set a school record by striking out 17 McNeese St. Cowboys in just seven innings of work in the first game of the Big Ball Sports Tournament in Houston, TX. Brandt throws a 90mph fastball and a wicked, tailing curve ball. He was selected in the 50th round by the Seattle Mariners in the 1997 Major League draft.
Karp, a highly-touted freshman from Bothell, WA, has matured quickly to become the No. 2 starter in the UCLA rotation. Winner of his last three decisions, Karp owns a 6-3 record with a 4.77 ERA and 59 strikeouts in 66.0 IP. On April 17 versus Arizona State, Karp took a four-hit shutout into the ninth inning against the nation's number one lineup (currently #1 in batting average and #3 in runs per game), eventually leaving with one away in the inning and the game solidly in hand. Karp, who throws a 93mph fastball, was drafted in the eighth round by the Atlanta Braves in the 1998 Major League draft. The Braves left a $2 million offer on the table for six weeks before Karp turned it down to play baseball for UCLA. Karp is one of eight freshmen invited to attend this summer.
Brandt and Karp are two of fourteen pitchers invited to the '99 USA Baseball training camp, and two of eight Pac-10 players invited. UCLA is one of six schools with two players requested and just one of two with two pitchers invited.
The National Team, coached by Texas A&M head coach Mark Johnson, will play the Japan Collegiate All-Star Team in Japan from June 22-July 1, compete in a US West-sponsored Western United States Tour and also is entered in the NBC World Series in Wichita, KS, August 6-17.
Series Recap: UCLA at #15 USC, April 30-May 2
Bruins Defeat Trojans 8-5, Win Season Series
The UCLA Bruins defeated crosstown rival USC, 8-5 on Sunday afternoon in a Pacific-10 Conference game at Dedeaux Field in front of a crowd of 1,605.
The Trojans (30-22 overall, 15-6 Pac-10) fell two games behind first-place Stanford in the Pac-10 standings. UCLA won two of the three games over the weekend and improved to 26-26, 10-8. The red-hot Bruins have won nine of their last ten Pac-10 games and 13 of the last 17 overall.
The pitching of UCLA sophomore LHP Bobby Roe (3-3) and timely hitting of senior c Jason Green proved to be the difference. Roe went a career-high eight innings, scattering nine hits, two walks and four earned runs while striking out six against the Pac-10s second-best offensive club. It was a vintage Bobby Roe performance, as he teased the Trojans and their fans by stranding eight USC baserunners. Sophomore RHP Chad Cislak pitched a 1-2-3 ninth to earn his fifth save.
Jason Green turned in another clutch performance, going 3-for-4 with three RBI against four different USC pitchers. Green needed a triple to hit for the cycle, as he hit his 15th double and his fifth homer of the year, a solo shot in the eighth inning that gave UCLA a two-run cushion. The Bruins are now 5-0 when Green goes deep.
The Bruins took an early 4-1 lead, highlighted by sophomore lf Bill Scotts team-high 19th homer of the season, a solo shot in the first inning off starter Steve Immel.
The Trojans cut UCLAs lead to 6-5 in the seventh on junior c Eric Munsons sacrifice fly, but that would be USCs last run. The 1999 Preseason Player of the Year, who made his first start in 22 games, was 0-for-2 with one RBI on the afternoon. In four games versus the UCLA pitching staff, the 98 All-American was 0-for-15, including 0-for-5 against Roe.
Green hit a solo home run to start the top of the eighth, and sophomore 1B Garrett Atkins had an RBI double in the top of the ninth to help pad UCLAs lead. Atkins was 3-for-4 with two doubles (15 on the season), two runs, and an RBI.
The Bruins end up taking 4 of 6 from their crosstown rival. After losing the first game of a nonconference series at Jackie Robinson on March 5, the Bruins stormed back to win the last two, 6-5 and 8-7 (10). After losing the first game of this series, the Bruins scored three runs in the top of the ninth, overcoming a 2-0 deficit to win 3-2. Todays victory was UCLAs 100th all-time versus USC. The last time UCLA took four of six from USC was in 1987, when the Bruins swept the Trojans in one series and took one of three in the second set. The last time the Bruins won both series was in 1986, when UCLA swept both sets from the Trojans.
Bruins Shift Momentum and Break Dubious Streak With Triumphant 3-2 Victory Over #15 USC The UCLA baseball team rallied for three runs in the ninth inning to defeat No. 15 USC, 3-2, in a Pacific-10 Conference game on Saturday afternoon at Dedeaux Field in front of a crowd of 1,242. The victory was UCLAs fifth ninth-inning comeback triumph of the year.
USC senior RHP Justin Lehr pitched eight shutout innings and the Trojans held a 2-0 lead entering the ninth inning. After the first out, UCLA sophomore 2B Chase Utley singled to center field (his third hit), and sophomore RHP Rik Currier replaced Lehr. Currier walked sophomore LF Bill Scott, and Currier was pulled in favor of senior RHP Dominic Correa (1-1).
Sophomore 1B Garrett Atkins lined a single off the right-field wall, scoring Utley and moving junior of Michael Hymes, who pinch-ran for Scott, to second base. Correa struck out the next batter for the second out. Senior C Jason Green worked his way to a 1-2 count, fouled off four straight pitches, then slapped an RBI single into right field to score Hymes and move Atkins to second base.
Sophomore RF Matt Pearl then hit a ground ball down the first-base line, which USC junior 1B Carlos Casillas dove for and stopped. Pearl beat out Casillas throw to Correa for a single, and Atkins hustled all the way from second base to score the go-ahead run.
The Trojans went 1-2-3 in the bottom of the ninth, making a winner out of sophomore RHP Chad Cislak (4-1), who pitched a scoreless three innings of relief.
Freshman rhp Josh Karp kept the Bruins poised for the win with another fantastic outing. The freshman out of Bothell, WA shut down the Trojans on one run (earned) off just five hits in six innings of work.
UCLAs 3-2 victory snapped two dubious streaks. The Bruins had gone 404 games without winning a game when scoring three runs or less before today. In addition, UCLA snapped its 120-game losing streak when scoring three runs or less. Its last victory was a 3-2 count in 1992 over Mississippi State at the NCAA Mideast Regional.
Fantastic Outing By Carter Spoiled in Series Opening Loss The UCLA Bruins recorded a season-low two hits in a 4-1 loss at USC Friday night. The Bruins (24-26,8-8) had their seven-game Pac-10 win streak come to an end.
The Bruins took a 1-0 lead in the second inning on UCLA sophomore 3B Nick Lyons two-out homer to center field, his second of the year. The only other hit that Zito allowed also came in the second inning, a two-strike single up the middle by sophomore cf Charles Merricks.
Sophomore lhp Ryan Carter almost single-handedly kept the Bruins in the game with a gutsy seven-inning outing. The big southpaw threw a UCLA season-high 142 pitches to the Trojans, allowing just three earned runs and striking out five. However, the Bruins couldnt muster any offense against the Trojans, spoiling a great performance by Carter and dropping him to 1-7 on the year.
Two notable hitting streaks came to an end: and UCLA sophomores Chase Utley and Garrett Atkins at 15 games each.
Head Coach Gary Adams
After he recorded his 1,000th career victory on March 13 at Arizona, the skipper was stuck on the magical number for 21 days and eight games. He finally got win No. 1,001 on April 3 at Berkeley in a Pac-10 game against the California Golden Bears. After two victories at Arkansas April 6 and 7, Adams' career record stands at 1,011-738-12 (.578) over 30 years of collegiate head coaching experience. 188 of his wins came at Division II UC Irvine, where he guided the Anteaters from 1970 to 1974, winning national titles in '73 and '74.
The 1,000-win milestone was the biggest of three major career coaching accomplishments for Adams in 1999. UCLA's 6-5 victory over USC on March 6 gave Adams his 500th nonconference victory in 25 seasons at UCLA. His nonconference record now stands at 504-298-7 (.628). UCLA's 12-3 victory over the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets on Saturday, February 6 gave the skipper 800 victories in 25 years and 1,449 games managing in Westwood. His record at UCLA now stands at 823-669-7 (.552). He had been stuck on 799 for ten days and two games before reaching the 800-plateau. His Pac-10 conference record is 327-386 (.459).

A fantastic contact hitter and passionate competitor, Baron can almost always be counted on to get at least one base hit a game. Key Stat: He has hit safely in 38 of 42 games that he has had at least three at-bats in. He has put together hitting streaks of ten, 13, and 11 and has not gone more than three games without recording a base hit. He struck out the side three times and set down six Cowboys in a row at one point. McNeese State is responsible for one of 10 defeats #1 Rice has suffered this season. His previous career-high was seven Ks. The performance earned him Louisville Slugger National Player of the Week and GTE Student-Athlete of the Week honors. The staff ace leads in ERA among regular starters (4.36), wins (7), innings pitched (95.0), strikeouts (99), batters struck out looking (41), and runners picked off (5). One of two Bruins invited to participate in the 99 USA Baseball Trials. Has a 3.31 ERA and an opponents BA of .194 in games won.
#19 Sophomore RHP Chad Cislak:This hard-throwing sophomore has come on of late, recording either a win or a save in his last seven Pac-10 games. Is 4-0 with three saves and leads the team with a 2.81 ERA in Pac-10 action. The hardest thrower on the team, Cislak has been clocked as high as 95mph during a game. Has lowered ERA in each of last seven outings. Establishing himself as the 99 closer after missing 3 weeks due to mechanical problems early in the season. Is second on the team with 20 appearances. Cislak returned to form at #9 Arkansas by shutting out the Hogs in the ninth inning of both games, striking out four and earning the save in both outings. Leads the team with five saves. Has allowed just one hit and no runs in last three appearances (4.2 IP) vs. #2 CS Fullerton and #16 USC. Allowed just just six hits and one run last six appearances (9.1IP). Leads the Bruins in sacrifice flies (4) and beanballs (5). Walked in the winning run vs. ASU, April 16. Has committed just four passed balls this season. UCLA leads the Pac-10 in fewest passed balls with 6. Won the "GTE Student-Athlete of the Week" award for the week of Feb. 1-Feb. 7. Was 7-for-17 (.412) with eight RBI in four games that week. Had the most memorable at-bat of the season at USC, May 1. Down 3-1 with two down and two on in the ninth, Green stepped up to the plate carrying the entire season on his back. A loss here, and the Bruins would have been in serious danger of being swept by the Trojans, which would all but dash their postseason hopes. Green fouled off four consecutive pitches before lining a 1-2 single to right, just beyond the reach of the USC second baseman. Michael Hymes scored from second base, tying the game at two. The Bruins would go on to win the game and the series, as they took the last game on the strength of 3-for-4 performance by Green , who needed just a triple to hit for the cycle. Going into that fateful at-bat on Saturady afternoon in front of 1242 screaming fans, Green was 0-for-3. But like all great leaders, Jason refused to go down without a fight, leading his teammates by example and pumping new life into a team that was dominated the night before by the Trojans.
#21 Freshman RHP Josh Karp: This freshman phenom had one of the best outings by a Bruin freshman ever April 17 vs. ASU. Carried a four-hit shutout into the top of the ninth against the nations number one lineup (batting average (.370) and runs per game (12.2)). Karp also struck out a career-high 10 Sun Devils, including eight of nine starters at least once in grabbing his fifth victory, improving to 5-3 on the season. Struck out the side twice (4th and 8th inn.). ASU whiffed on the third strike nine of ten times vs. his 93mph fastball. 1998 All-Pac-10 South selections Willie Bloomquist and Andrew Beinbrink of ASU were 1-for-8 against Josh. Karps 8.1 innings pitched tied the staffs season-high. Karp went 8.1 IP in UCLAs 6-1 victory at Arizona (March 13), and sophomore rhp Jon Brandt went a career-high 8.1 IP at Washington on March 27. Versus Arizona, 3/13, he scattered eight hits over 8.1 IP, allowing just one run and two walks as the winning pitcher in Head Coach Gary Adams 1,000th career victory. He has a 1.62 in two games (16.2 IP) versus the Arizona schools, both of whom are most likely bound for the postseason. Struck out seven batters in victories over then-#2 Georgia Tech (2/6) and Cal (2/27). Shut down #16 USC on one run (earned) and struck out five over six innings in UCLAs 3-2 victory. 1998 Freshman of the Year Xavier Nady was 0-for-3 with one strikeout vs. Karp in that game. In games won, Karp has a 3.22 ERA with a .231 opponents BA and 47 Ks. Has a 2.57 ERA with 20 strikeouts in last 4 appearances (3 starts) against #9 Arkansas, #26 Arizona State, Washington State, and #16 USC. Has won last three decisions. Leads the team in Pac-10 batting average (.375), homers (10), RBI (26), total bases (61), slugging percentage (.847), and on-base percentage (.477). Has not committed an error in 25 chances in league play. Has had hitting streaks of sixteen (2/13 at Rice 3/12 at Arizona) and eight this season ... Hit .543 (19-35) with 13 runs, 7 HR, and 18 RBI during the last streak, 3/16 vs. LBSU 4/3 at Cal. Hit .438 (28-64) with 13 runs, 8 2B, 6 HR, and 30 RBI during his career-high 16-game hit streak. Had a 9-game RBI streak, 2/19 vs. LMU 3/5 vs. USC. Leads the team with 25 multi-hit games and 16 multi-RBI games. Has had two four-RBI games and one six RBI game. Ever since going 2-for-3 with a homer, double, and six RBI at #1 Rice on 2/13, he has raised his average from .237 to a season-high .390 on 4/3, an increase of .153 points. An excellent clutch hitter, Scott hit the game-tying home run in UCLAs remarkable ninth-inning comeback vs. Loyola Marymount, Feb. 19. Hit the game-winner in the bottom of the tenth against USC on March 7, winning the series for the Bruins. He was 0-for-4 coming into that at-bat with a sixteen-game hitting streak on the line as well. Named to Baseball Americas midseason Sophomore All-American first team. Selected Pac-10 Player of the Week, Louisville Slugger National Player of the Week and GTE Student-Athlete of the Week for the week of March 29-April 3 on the strength of a record-setting performance in UCLA 16-15 loss at Washington on March 30. Scott hit four home runs, including two grand slams, knocked in 11 runs, and racked up 17 total bases against the Huskies that day. All three achievements set Pac-10 records. No one in thirty years of Pac-10 baseball and 80 years of Bruin baseball has accomplished what Scott did in that game. In addition, Scott was 5-for-6 in the game with five runs scored, which places him second on the all-time Pac-10 single-game runs list. Scott fell one jack short of tying the NCAA mark for most home runs in a single game, three short of the RBI record, and one short of the single-game grand slam record. The NCAA record for total bases is 23. Interestingly, this was Scotts first and only collegiate multi-homer game. His previous high for most home runs in a game was two, back when the Granada Hills native starred at Alemany HS. For the week, Scott was 10-18 with five home runs, 12 RBI, and 10 runs scored. Finally, the red-hot Scott also won the GTE Student-Athlete of the Month award for March. During those 31 days Scott hit .448 (26-58) with eight home runs, 14 runs scored, and 26 RBI.
#9 Freshman 3B Randall Shelley: Was the lone freshman in the starting lineup on opening day. Hit first collegiate home run, 3/7 vs. USC. Was 3-for-4 with a run, two RBI, and a double in the Bruins' 6-1 victory over Arizona ... Hitting .286 in Pac-10 play ... Had the first Bruin triple of the year, 2/6 vs. Georgia Tech ... Was 2-for-4 with a double, triple, run, and RBI against then-#2 Georgia Tech on 2/6.
#27 Sophomore 2B Chase Utley: This 98 Freshman All-American has hit safely in 17 of last 18 games, going 30-for-77 (.390) with 19 runs, 5 HR (two grand slams), and 21 RBI. Hit .382 (26-68) with 19 runs, 20 RBI, and 5 HR (two grand slams) during career-high 15-game hitting streak, 3/29-4/27. At Berkeley on 4/3, went 5-for-6 (career-high), with three runs (tied career-high established 3/29 at Washington and again vs. ASU, 4/16), four RBI, a double, and his first career grand slam His slam capped off a nine-run ninth that enabled the Bruins to finish off the Bears, 13-10, and break an eight-game losing streak. Leads the Bruins in triples (2) and at-bats (221) and is second in runs with 53 and RBI with 47. Is second on the squad with a .359 average and 4 HR in Pac-10 play. Batting .348 with runners in scoring position in the Pac-10. With one away and the bases juiced in the bottom of the ninth, Utley erased a two-run deficit with a monster shot to left field off Arizona State reliever Bobby Milner, giving the Bruins an 8-6 victory and a three-game sweep of the #26 Sun Devils in a highly crucial Pac-10 series at Jackie Robinson Stadium, April 18th. It was Utleys second homer of the game, and second grand slam of the season. He has two multi-homer games this year and five throughout his collegiate career. He also had a career-high six RBI in the game, as the Bruins swept the Sun Devils for the first time since 1986. Named GTE Student-Athlete of the Week for his performance that week. Was 9-for-18 with 2 HR and 9 RBI during the week of April 12-April 18. Named to Baseball America's annual midseason Sophomore All-America team (second team). Key Stat: After committing 24 errors in 53 games at shortstop and second base last year, the sophomore has committed just 11 through 52 games at second base. Had a sixteen-game errorless streak broken with a throwing error versus CS Fullerton, April 27. Has committed just three errors in his last 27 games. Only other Bruin besides Atkins to start all 52 games this season.
