All-American Bill Scott Collects Three Hits In Team USA Debut

June 13, 1999

UCLA slugger Bill Scott made his presence with Team USA immediately felt, collecting three hits, including a home run and double in Team USA's 18-11 loss to Mexico on Saturday night at Hi Corbett Field in Tucson, AZ. The All-American who batted .380 with 28 home runs and 86 RBI as a sophomore for UCLA in 1999, is one of 39 players competing for 22 finals roster spots. Ten of those players are currently playing at the College World Series.

On Sunday, Scott came off the bench and doubled home two in the seventh inning to break a 1-1 tie, as Team USA went on to defeat Mexico 3-1 at Hi Corbett Field in the second game of a four-game series.

Freshman All-American Josh Karp and sophomore Jon Brandt, who were named as UCLA's co-pitchers of the year at the team banquet on Saturday night, are also competing for spots on the final roster. Against Mexico on Saturday, Karp, who came out of the bullpen, allowed four runs (all earned) on seven hits and two walks in 2.2 innings while Brandt, also coming out of the bullpen, allowed six runs (all earned) on five hits and three walks while striking out four in 2.1 innings.

The roster is expected to be trimmed to 22 after the four-game series against Mexico. Team USA leaves on Wednesday to play the Salem Volcanoes, a short-season affiliate of the San Francisco Giants. On Thursday, Team USA plays Canada in Tacoma, WA. Then Team USA leaves for Tokyo on June 19 for a five-game series against the Japanese Collegiate All-Stars.
