UCLA Gymnasts Earn 17 All-America Honors
April 26, 1999
Five UCLA gymnasts earned 17 All-America honors in 1999, breaking the school record of 15 set a year ago. UCLA led all schools at the NCAA Championships with most first-team honors (13), most overall honors (17, tied with Georgia) and most first-team All-American gymnasts (five).
Junior Heidi Moneymaker (Santa Rosa, CA) became the first gymnast in UCLA history to earn the maximum five first-team honors (all-around, vault, bars, beam and floor) at an NCAA Championship. She now has eight All-America honors in her career, third-most in school history.
Senior Kiralee Hayashi (Kailua, HI) added to her All-America stash by earning first-team honors on vault, beam and floor as well as second-team honors in the all-around. Her nine All-America certificates rank second all-time at UCLA.
Junior Lena Degteva (Mississauga, Ontario) earned first-team All-America honors in the all-around, vault and bars. She also earned second-team acclaim on the floor exercise. Like Moneymaker, she also ranks third all-time with eight career All-America honors.
Senior Luisa Portocarrero (Guatemala City, Guatemala) ended her career as a first-team All-American on vault and a second-teamer on bars. She was a first-team All-American as a freshman on beam.
Rounding out the All-American list is sophomore Mohini Bhardwaj (Cincinnati, OH), who earned first-team honors on bars and second-team honors in the all-around.
