The 1998-99 Bruins
In the April 1 MasterCard collegiate rankings, UCLA was ranked 26th. Individually, senior Byron Schlagenhauf was ranked 39th, junior Jason Semelsberger was ranked 42nd and sophomore Jeff McGraw was ranked 87th. In their most recent event, the Carpet Capital Invitational, the Bruins finished 13th and Schlagenhauf finished sixth. At the Cleveland Southwestern Intercollegiates, UCLA tied for eighth. Redshirt freshman Parker McLachlin tied for 11th at 217. At the TaylorMade Big Island Classic, the Bruins finished 11th. In the first event of 1999, the Bruins captured third place in the PING/Arizona Classic with a score of 868. In the Fall, the Bruins recorded finishes of 5th at the Topy Cup; 11th at the PING Golfweek Preview; 1st at the Northwest Classic; 6th at the Jerry Pate Intercollegiates; and 12th at the Golf World Collegiate. In their most exciting victory of the Sherfy Era, the Bruins won a three-team playoff to capture their first team title of the 1998-99 season. Tied after 54-holes in the Northwest Classic, the Bruins played the 455-yard, par 4 16th hole at Trysting Tree GC in one-under par to take first place honors over Washington and Oregon.
THE PLAYERS
Senior Byron Schlagenhauf has won two tournaments this season and was ranked 39th nationally in the MasterCard poll for April 1. In October, he averaged 68.6 strokes per round. In nine events, he has finished first once, tied for first, placed second and sixth. He tied for first at the Jerry Pate Intercollegiates and won his first collegiate tournament by firing an eight-under par total of 208 (69-67-72) at the Northwest Classic. At the Pate Intercollegiates, he played the final 36 holes in nine-under par, highlighted by a seven-under par round of 64, tied for the low round of the tournament. His second round 67 at the Northwest featured a seven-under par back nine of 29 in which he birdied seven of the final nine holes. He finished second at the Topy Cup with scores of 74-70-144. At the Carpet Capital, he carded rounds of 69-70-74-213 to finish three-under for the tournament. He leads the team with a 73.0 scoring average, eight rounds under par, five rounds under 70 four top 10 finishes and five top 20 finishes. He has been the Bruins' top individual in four of nine events this season.
Junior Jason Semelsberger was ranked 42nd nationally in the April 1 MasterCard poll. He recorded his best finish of the season, tied for third, at the Northwest Classic with a five-under par, 54-hole total of 211 (70-68-73). His finish at the Northwest was the fifth top 10 finish of his career. His stroke average of 74.5 ranks fourth on the team. He posted a fifth place finish at the PING/Golfweek event with rounds of 70-73-76-219. He tied for eighth at the PING/Arizona Classic with rounds of 66-72-75. His first round 66 was his lowest round of the season and tied him for the first round lead. He also shot a 69 in the final round of the Cleveland SW Invite and an even par 70 in the first round of the TaylorMade event. Semelsberger qualified and played as an amateur in the 1997 U.S. Open at Congressional and also participated in the 1998 U.S. Amateur at Oak Hill CC.
Freshman Parker McLachlin on Dec. 30, 1998 shot a course record and career best 59 at the Waikoloa King's Course in Hawaii. His 11-under par round featured six straight birdies on a front nine where he carded a 29. Through 15 holes, he was 11-under par and maintained that score to break Isao Aoki's course record of 62. In eight collegiate tournaments, he has averaged 74.1, the team's third best average. He recorded a collegiate best finish by tying for eighth at the TaylorMade event (the same course where he shot his 59) at 225. His first round 69 was tied for fourth. He tied for 11th at the SW Invite at 217, four over par. His final round 67 was a collegiate best. He tied for 33rd at the Northwest Classic and his two-putt par on the playoff hole clinched the team's victory. He tied for 29th in his first collegiate event at Hazeltine. Although he tied for 43rd at the Pate, he shot a 70 in the second round. He has recorded four rounds under par, third best on the team, and also has two rounds under 70. This season he has been the Bruins' low individual twice in nine events.
Sophomore Mike Vera has averaged 78.9 in 14 rounds. He tied for 18th at the Topy Cup, his second career top 20 finish. He also tied for 58th at the PING/Arizona Collegiate, but played the final 36 holes in six over par. He tied for 74th in the TaylorMade tournament.
Sophomore Kevin Bodlovich played in his first tournament as a Bruin and recorded a solid result by tying for 33rd place. His first round 70 put him in a tie for 11th after 18 holes. At the TaylorMade event, he shot a collegiate best two-under par 68 to tie for second place after the first round. He finished in a tie for 42nd. At the Southwest, he recorded scores of 72 and 73 in the first and final rounds. In nine rounds he has averaged 75.4.
Sophomore Jeff McGraw has averaged 73.9 in 17 rounds this season and was ranked 87th in the April 1 MasterCard rankings. He finished sixth in the Golf World Invitational, a season best, with rounds of 70-70-73-213, three-under par. He tied for 15th at the Pate tournament with scores of 69-67-77-213, even par. His 67 established a career best and his finish was a season best. He tied for 26th at the Northwest and his up-and-down par on the playoff hole enabled the Bruins to remain in contention for the title. He has posted six rounds under par, second best on the team, and three rounds under 70, which ties for second on the squad.
Sophomore Ross Fulgentis earned All-Pac-10 Honorable Mention acclaim in 1998. His stroke average continued to drop after his game improved late in the Fall. His scores at the Northwest event were 75-74-77 - 226. He shot a season best one-under par 70 at the Jerry Pate event. He placed in a tie for 46th at the Topy Cup and has averaged 77.0 in 11 rounds.
Head Coach Brad Sherfy earned 1998 Pac-10 Coach of the Year after guiding the Bruins to five tournament victories, the most by a UCLA team in 11 years. Four years ago, the Bruins were ranked 64th nationally and have been ranked as high as 10th. Sherfy, a 1978 UCLA All-American, guided the 1997 Bruins to their first NCAA appearance since 1993. An outstanding player, Sherfy has played in four U.S. Opens, three PGA Championships and won more than 80 events on various satellite tours. In 1998, he qualified and played in the Buick and Nissan Opens.
