No. 16 Women's Swimming & Diving Squad Heads to Pac-10 Championships

THIS WEEK - The No. 16 UCLA Bruins (6-4-1, 1-4-1) travel to Federal Way, WA to compete in the 1999 Pacific-10 Championships on Feb. 25-27. The Pac-10 championships will be televised on Fox Sports Net on March 4th at 1 pm. Before returning home, the swim team will compete at the Federal Way Invitational on Sunday, Feb. 28 at 11 am.
UCLA AT THE PAC-10 CHAMPIONSHIPS - The Bruins finished fifth last season at Pac- 10s with a score of 899.00. In 12 years of conference action, the Bruins have finished second four times, third five times, fourth once and fifth twice. For 11 straight years the Bruins have had a Pac-10 champion for a total of 23 individual titles. (See chart on pg. 2)
BRUINS vs. PAC-10 OPPONENTS - Despite a 1-4-1 dual meet record against Pac-10 opponents this season, UCLA posted some great performances against conference rivals. Junior All-American Keiko Price captured first in the 50 free and placed no lower than second in the 100 free against Pac-10 opponents faced. Freshman standout Katie Younglove finished no lower than third in the 200 fly, while rookie counterpart Lyndee Hovsepian has finished in the top-two in the 200 breast and top-three in the 100 breast against Pac-10 opponents.
MOST RECENT - The Bruins fell to cross-town rival USC 109-191 but had one of their best performances of the season. Fifteen swimmers recorded season top times, and five swimmers met NCAA consideration standards. Younglove automatically qualified for NCAAs in the 200 fly and recorded the third fastest time (1:59.82) in school history in the 200 fly.
IN THE FUTURE - Next up for the Bruins will be the 1999 NCAA Swimming & Diving Championships in Athens, GA from Mar. 18-20. Younglove is the only Bruin so far to automatically qualify for NCAAs, but UCLA hopes to have more swimmers qualify at Pac-10s. Price, Hovsepian, Jen Noddle, Beth Goodwin, Nicole Beck, Julia Voitovitsch and Becky Thompson have all met NCAA consideration standards. UCLA divers Liz Ackerman, Anne Baghramian and Delilah More will be competing at NCAA Zonals on Mar. 12-13 in Tempe.
THE FUTURE'S SO BRIGHT - The 1999 UCLA freshman class is one of the biggest and most talented in years. The 23 Bruin rookies have made a big impact for UCLA this season. UCLA's top times this season are held by freshmen in nine of 14 events. Four swimmers and one diver have automatically qualified or met NCAA consideration standards.
KEIKO PRICE - A two-year All-American and one of the top swimmers in the nation, junior Keiko Price continues to lead UCLA. Price holds UCLA's top times this season in the 50, 100 and 200 free and in the 200 IM and is the school record- holder in the 100 free. Her 50 free time of 22:86 at the Husky Invite is the second fastest in the nation this season, and her 200 IM time of 2:02.17 was .03 away from tying the school record. Price has met NCAA consideration standards in the 50, 100 and 200 free and the 200 IM. She has totalled 21 first-place finishes this season, including nine first-place finishes in the 50 free. On the national and international front, Price placed fourth this summer at U.S. Nationals in the 100 free, earning a spot on the U.S. roster for the '99 Pan- Pacific Games in Australia.
BETH GOODWIN - Sophomore All-American Beth Goodwin continues to step up for the Bruins this season, recording nine first-place finishes. She improved her 100 fly time to 55.12 at the Husky Invite, finishing first and meeting NCAA consideration standards. As a freshman last season, Goodwin finished third in the 100 fly at Pac-10s, recording the fourth fastest 100 fly time in school history.
AMBER WINES - Providing experience to UCLA's young class of breaststrokers is junior All-American Amber Wines (Santa Ana/Santa Ana Valley HS). She finished second in the 100 breast at the Husky Invite with a time of 1:03.55, meeting NCAA consideration standards. Wines holds the second fastest 100 breast time (1:02.13) in school history. She finished third in the 100 breast and 11th in the 200 breast at Pac-10s last season.
KATIE YOUNGLOVE - Headlining UCLA's talented rookie class is freshman Katie Younglove (Sacramento/St. Francis HS). She has emerged as one of UCLA's top swimmers, registering team top-times in the 500 and 1000 free and the 200 fly. She is the only Bruin so far to automatically qualify for NCAAs and holds the third fastest 200 fly time in school history (1:59.82). Younglove has totaled nine first-place finishes and has finished no lower than third in the 200 fly.
LYNDEE HOVSEPIAN - Adding talent to UCLA's class of breastrokers is freshman Lyndee Hovsepian (Rancho Mirage/Cathedral City HS). She holds the top-times this season in the 100 breast (1:03.07) and the 200 breast (2:16.06). Hovsepian has totalled seven first-place finishes this season, including first in the 200 breast against defending national champion Stanford. She ranks third in the 200 breast and fourth in the 100 breast in the UCLA record book.
JEN NODDLE - Bruin breaststroker and IM phenom Jen Noddle is yet another standout in UCLA's deep pool of freshmen talent. She has met NCAA consideration standards in the 100 and 200 breast and 200 and 400 IM. Noddle has totalled six first place finishes this season and has finished no lower than third in the 200 breast. She holds the fastest 400 IM time this season (4:24.30) and ranks fifth all-time in the 200 breast and fourth in the 200 IM (2:04.36).
NICOLE BECK - Leading UCLA's backstrokers this season is freshman Nicole Beck (Ventura/Buena HS). She leads the team in the 100 back (57.30) and the 200 back (2:00.27). Her 200 back time of 2:00.27 at the Husky Invite met NCAA consideration standards and was good enough for sixth place on the UCLA all-time top-times list.
JULIA VOITOVITSCH - Adding an international flavor to the Bruins is 1996 German Olympian and freshman sensation Julia Voitovitsch. Against USC, she claimed third in both the 100 and 200 fly, meeting NCAA consideration standards in both events. She ranks second on the team in the 100 fly (55.86) and the 200 fly (2:01.86) this season and ranks seventh in the 200 fly and eighth in the 100 fly on UCLA's all-time top-times list.
BECKY THOMPSON - Providing experience to this young Bruin team is senior Becky Thompson (Chino Hills/Walnut). Thompson finished second in the 500 free against Stanford and Cal and has met NCAA consideration standards in the 200 free. She has finished in the top-five in the 200 free all season, including first against Rice and first in the 500 free against UCSD.
MEGAN BARNUM - Freshman Megan Barnum (Cupertino/St. Francis HS) has added depth for UCLA primarily in the backstroke. She ranks fifth in the 200 back (2:08.50) and seventh in the 100 back (1:00.44).
ANGELA BELLONI - Washington native freshman Angela Belloni (Bellevue/Sammamish HS) has also stepped up for UCLA this season. She holds the third fastest 50 free time (23.73) on the team this season. Belloni has finished in the top-five in the 50 free against Pac-10 opponents faced and is a member of UCLA's top 200, 400 and 800 free relay teams.
MARILYN CHUA - Freshman Marilyn Chua has made an impact for the Bruins sprinters. She is tied for fourth in the 100 free (52.44) and ranks fifth in the 200 free (1:53.40) and sixth in the 50 free (24.42).
BRIGHID DWYER - Sophomore Brighid Dwyer (Novato/Marin Academy) ranks third on the team in the 100 back (58.63) and the 200 fly (2:04.61) and fourth in the 100 fly (56.40). She finished 19th in the 100 and 200 fly at Pac-10s last season.
AMANDA HALL - Two-year All-American and one of UCLA's top backstrokers this season, Amanda Hall is providing senior leadership as well. She ranks fifth all- time in the 200 back and sixth in the 100 back and is second-best on the team this season in both events. She has finished in the top-four in the 200 back against 1999 Pac-10 opponents.
JULIE MASSEY - Joining the Bruin-Washington connection is freshman Julie Massey (Tacoma/Mt. Rainier HS). She recorded the fifth fastest time in school history in the 200 IM (2:04.42) at the Husky Invite. Massey swam well against Stanford, finishing third in the 200 breast and the 200 IM.
HILARY PETERSON - Freshman Hilary Peterson (Palo Alto/Palo Alto HS) is UCLA's fourth-fastest swimmer in the 200 free (1:53.28) and the 200 fly (2:04.97). Notably, she finished second in the 200 free vs. Arizona and third in the 200 fly vs. Stanford
HOLIDAY POWELL - Freshman Holiday Powell (Los Altos/Los Altos HS) has added depth to UCLA's class of breastrokers. She ranks fifth on the team in the 200 breast (2:25.67) and sixth in the 100 breast (1:09.60).
SAMANTHA SCHACHER - Freshman Samantha Schacher (Aptos/Aptos HS) is another Bruin rookie who has stepped up for UCLA this season. At the Husky Invite, she swam a season-high and the eighth best time in school history (2:05.05) in the 200 IM. Notably, she finished first in the 100 free against UCSD and second in the 100 fly against San Diego. She holds the fourth-fastest time this season in both the 100 and 200 back.
GERALDINE SCHICK - A standout in UCLA's corps of distance swimmers is freshman Geraldine Schick. She ranks second on the team in the 1650 free (17:15.27) and third in both the 500 free (4:58.44) and the 1000 free (10:21.95). Notably, she finished second in the 1650 free against Cal and third in the 1000 free against Stanford.
EMMANUELLE SCHICK-GARCIA - A versatile swimmer for the Bruins, senior Schick- Garcia is among some of the Bruin best. She ranks sixth all-time in the 200 IM and eighth in the 400 IM. She holds the second fastest 400 IM time this season (4:26.72).
KATIE RYAN - Returning home to compete in her first Pac-10 Championships is freshman Katie Ryan (Federal Way/Mt. Rainier HS). She holds the second fastest time in the 50 free (23.65) this season and had her best performance against ASU, finishing third in the 50 and 100 free. She is a member of UCLA's top 200, 400 and 800 free relay teams.
ERIN THOMAS - One of UCLA's top distance swimmers this season, freshman Erin Thomas will look to step up her performance at Pac-10s. She holds UCLA's top time this season in the 1650 free (17:08.52) and is second in the 1000 free (10:18.74). She has totaled five first-place finishes this season, including first in the 500 free against Stanford and first in the 1650 free against Cal.
JANET WORTHINGTON - Freshman Janet Worthington (Carmichael/Rio Americano HS) has stepped up her level of competition in the later part of this season. She ranks third on the team in the 400 IM (4:28.57) and finished fourth in the 400 IM against Cal.
LIZ ACKERMAN - Freshman diver Liz Ackerman has stepped up for UCLA, recording UCLA's top score and qualifying for NCAA zonals on one-meter (championship standard). She has finished second on one-meter three times this season, with her high score coming at the Husker Shoot Out.
ANNE BAGHRAMIAN - UCLA's top diver this season, sophomore Anne Baghramian (Long Beach/Chadwick School) holds UCLA's top scores on the one-meter and the three- meter and has qualified for zones on the three-meter board. She has totaled eight first-place finishes this season, including first on both boards against Cal and ASU.
DELILAH MORE - Sophomore Delilah More (Mission Viejo/Capistrano Valley HS) is UCLA's top platform diver. She holds the top score on platform (335.85) and finished first at the Bruin Invitational. More has qualified for Zones on platform.
CELEBRATING WOMEN'S ATHLETICS - The UCLA Athletic Department will celebrate the Silver Anniversary of UCLA Women's Intercollegiate Athletics on May 1, 1999. "A Celebration of Champions" dinner will honor the accomplishments of the UCLA Women's Intercollegiate Athletic Program and its athletes over the past 25 years.
