Utley and Scott homer; Cislak sharp on mound.
June 24, 1999
UCLA standout second baseman Chase Utley has quickly adjusted to the Cape Cod League. Utley, who was one of four first year players to hit .300 or above in the Cape last summer, is hitting .500 (4-8) through his first two games. On Wednesday, he collected two hits in four at bats, including a home run to right-center and an opposite field ground-rule double. Despite Utley's outstanding play, his Cotuit Kettleers fell to Falmouth, 4-3.
In other Cape action, UCLA closer Chad Cislak pitched two scoreless innings, allowing just one hit and one walk while striking out two. However, his Brewester Whitecaps were defeated by Wareham, 9-2.
All-American Bill Scott made UCLA's presence felt on the international scene. The Bruin slugger belted Akichika Yamada's first pitch of the fourth inning over the left field wall for his second homer of the summer. However, the United States National Team was defeated by the Japanese Collegiate All-Star Baseball Team, 4-1 at Meiji-Jingo Stadium in Tokyo. Yamada pitched a complete game, striking out 10. The second-game of the five-game series will be played on Thursday in Ibaragi.
