June 25, 1999
UCLA All-American Bill Scott continued his outstanding play with Team USA by collecting the Americans' lone two hits in a 9-1 loss to the Japanese Collegiate All-Stars on Thursday at Mito Stadium in Ibaragi.
Scott singled in the second inning and hit an opposite field home run in the seventh inning, his third homer of the summer. Team USA managed just one run the night before in a 3-1 loss to the Japanese Collegiate All-Stars, and that one run also came on a Scott homer.
The United States will try to avoid losing its eighth consecutive series to the Japanese Collegiate All-Stars played in Japan when it takes the field again on Saturday afternoon in Yamagata for game three of the five-game series. UCLA righthander Josh Karp, who is comming off an incredible performance against Team Canada, is slated to start for the Americans.
Over in the Cape Cod League on Thursday, UCLA lefthander Ryan Carter made his summer debut with the Cotuit Kettleers and he was extremely impressive. Carter pitched a scoreless inning, striking out two. He was throwing around 92 miles per hour. Rob Henkel, another UCLA lefthander, who has missed the past 17 months due to his recovery from elbow surgery, is slated to make his return to the hill on Friday for Yarmouth-Dennis. Henkel is scheduled to pitch one inning against Cotuit, a team which features Bruin stars Garrett Atkins and Chase Utley.
