Paneno Named GTE Academic All-District
March 23, 2000
LOS ANGELES -- UCLA men's soccer player Nick Paneno (La Ca?ada, CA) was named to the Men's University Division Fall/Winter At-Large GTE Academic All-District VIII second-team.
During the fall season, Paneno, a senior Sociology major with a 3.248 GPA, led UCLA to its second Final Four appearance in three years. Voted the team's Most Inspirational Player, he recorded three assists in 1999, including two in the NCAA Championships. His final assist in 1999 led to the game-winning goal, sending the Bruins into the semifinals. Paneno, a defensive midfielder, helped the Bruins shut out nine opponents during the season. Earlier, he was selected to the MPSF's All-Academic team.
Paneno is just the third Academic All-District selection in UCLA men's soccer history, joining 1997 selection Josh Keller and 1983 pick Roland Schmid.
The GTE Academic All-District is selected by voting among members of the Collegiate Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) in the district. To be eligible for consideration for the team, a student-athlete must carry a GPA of 3.2 or higher (on a 4.0 scale), must be in at least his second year of participation at the school and must be an important squad contributor.
