Walker Cruises Into Ojai Quarterfinals

Ojai, Calif. -Sara Walker dropped just two games in her second-round match Thursday, en route to a 6-1, 6-1 victory over USC's Jaqui Boyd, propelling her into the quarterfinals of the Pac-10 Championships in Ojai, Calif.
Walker, who earlier in the day disposed of Washington's Ilona Kordonskaya 7-6(3), 6-3 in the first round, moves on to a quarterfinal matchup with Arizona State's Karin Palme. Palme upset No. 3 seeded Teryn Ashley of Stanford 7-5, 6-3 in their second-round match.
After winning her first-round match Thursday, Bruin Annica Cooper fell to Stanford's Lauren Kalvaria 6-3, 7-5. Cooper was named the Pac-10 Player of the Year in 1998 after winning the Pac-10 Championships in Ojai her sophomore season.
Two Bruins advanced in the Pac-10 Invitational quarterfinals Thursday as Elizabeth Schmidt beat Stanford's Sara Pestieau 6-4, 6-2 and Catherine Hawley downed Morisa Yang of Cal 6-0, 6-1. Schmidt will take on USC's Krissy Hamilton-Heinberg and Hawley moves on to face Arizona's Laresa Marino. A win for both players would create an All-UCLA semifinal as both are in the top-half of the draw.
Petya Marinova dropped her second-round match to ASU's Mhairi Brown 6-4, 6-2.
Two Bruins dropped first-round matches Thursday as Abigail Spears fell to Stanford's Gabriela Lastra 7-6(6), 6-1 and Amanda Basica was knocked out by Stanford's Keiko Tokuda 6-2, 6-3.
Earlier Thursday, both Jennifer Donahue and Zana Zlebnik suffered first-round losses.
Doubles action begins on Friday.
