Henkel Named Louisville Slugger Co-National Player of the Week

May 15, 2000
LOS ANGELES, Calif. -- For the third time this season, junior left-hander Rob Henkel has been named Louisville Slugger's National Co-Player of the Week Collegiate Baseball announced today.
Henkel (La Mesa, Calif/ Monte Vista HS) pitched a one-hitter through seven innings and struck out 13 as the UCLA baseball team shutout Arizona 10-0 in the second game of a three-game Pac-10 series at Jackie Robinson Stadium May 14.
Henkel combined with UCLA relievers Mike Kunes and Scott Arrasmith for the one-hit shutout through nine innings, the first Bruin one-hitter since April 13, 1998 when Tony Righetti pitched a one-hitter vs. Hawaii-Hilo. The shutout for the Bruins was the first for UCLA this season, and first since May 8, 1999 vs. Oregon State.
Henkel held the second-best hitting team in the Pac-10 to one-hit and allowed just one baserunner to get as far as second base. Henkel has now struck out at least 11 batters in five games this season. He fanned the side in the fourth and two batters in each of the first, second, sixth and seventh innings. Henkel has a 6-2 record, a 4.31 ERA and 121 strikeouts this season.
This is the third national honor for Henkel, as he was selected a National Player of the Week March 14 and March 28 earlier this season.
The Bruins conclude a three-game series with Arizona Monday, May 15 at 6 p.m. at Jackie Robinson Stadium, their final home game of the season. UCLA (33-22, 15-5) enters the week alone in first place in the Pac-10, a half game ahead of second place Stanford (40-12, 15-6) and Arizona State (39-12, 15-6). The Bruins and the Cardinal face off next weekend in the final series of the regular season.
