May 17, 2000
LOS ANGELES, Calif. -- UCLA junior left fielder Bill Scott was selected a first-team All-American by USA Today/Baseball Weekly the publication announced today.
Scott, a native of Granada Hills, Calif., leads the Pac-10 with a .435 batting average, 101 hits, 183 total bases and a .796 slugging percentage. He has slugged 21 home runs this season, tied for second in the conference and ranking ninth in the nation.
The Bruin cleanup hitter is just the second player in UCLA history and sixth Pac-10 player to have 100 hits and at least 20 home runs in a single season. Troy Glaus was the only Bruin and last Pac-10 player to accomplish this feat with 108 hits and 34 home runs in 1997. With a .435 clip this season, Scott is on track to set the UCLA single season record for batting average. The all-time mark is .428 by Don Slaught in 1979.
Other honors this season for Scott include a Pac-10 Player of the Week nod May 1 after going 8-for-14 (.571) with 12 RBI, three doubles, a triple and two home runs in UCLA's three-game sweep of Washington State in Pullman.
Scott was one four Pac-10 players selected first-team All-Americans by Baseball Weekly. The others included Mitch Jones (Arizona State), Justin Wayne (Stanford) and Ben Diggins (Arizona). Arizona State's Casey Myers was named to the second-team.
