Stanford snaps Arkansas' streak of eight consecutive NCAA Outdoor championships (the record is nine straight by USC in ?35-'43). The Cardinal is the first Pac-10 school to win the Outdoor crown since UCLA in 1987 and '88.
UCLA Women's Head Coach Jeanette Bolden - "I'm happy for our team that we got third. It was difficult on Thursday and Friday knowing that we weren't going to have enough today. By today I had accepted it (knowing that the UCLA women were not going to win). I know why and the team knows why we came up short. It's impossible to win a championship meet like this without relays (UCLA's 4 X 100m relay did not get out of qualifying and the Bruins' 4 X 400m relay did not qualify for the meet). The standout for us in this meet was Seilala Sua (who defended her shot put and discus titles). She was great."
NCAA Champions:
UCLA Women - (3) Seilala Sua (Discus), Seilala Sua (Shot Put), Tracy O'Hara (Pole Vault)
All-Americans:
UCLA Women (4) - Christina Tolson (Hammer/Shot Put), Michelle Perry (400m Hurdles), Shakedia Jones (100m)
UCLA Men(1) - Jess Strutzel (800m),
UCLA Women (all finals)
Field Events:
Triple Jump - senior Deana Simmons, a two-time Outdoor All-American, did not make the final round and came in 16th (41-7). Competing with a left hamstring injury, Simmons' first jump was 41-7, then she fouled on her second attempt. She was about to make a third jump when the thunder and lighting hit. She then had to wait approximately one-and-one-half hours for her third jump, which was a foul.
Track Events:
100m - junior Shakedia Jones, a five-time Outdoor All-American, earned another All-America honor by placing sixth (11.55), getting three team points for the Bruins. Jones was competing with a right hamstring injury that she aggravated yesterday in the 100m semis (she was able to run a season-best 11.33 and qualify for today's final). About an hour after the 100m semis yesterday, Jones tried to qualify for today's 200m final, but the injury prevented her from getting a qualifying time. Jones spent most of last night and this morning getting treatment for the hamstring so she could race today. This was Jones' sixth race of the championships (Wednesday-anchor leg, 4 X 100m relay, DNQ, 200 prelims, Thursday-100m prelims, Friday-100 semis, 200m semis, DNQ, Saturday-100m final).
"I was hurting, but I was glad I could get some points for the team," Jones said. "My hamstring has been hurting for awhile, that's why I was happy I was able to just get in there for some points."
UCLA Men
The UCLA men had no competitors today. On Friday, senior Jess Strutzel picked up the Bruin men's only points (four), by placing fifth in the 800m final.
