Utley, Scott Selected All-Americans By The NCBWA

June 7, 2000
LOS ANGELES, Calif. -- UCLA junior second baseman Chase Utley and junior left-fielder Bill Scott were selected first-team and second-team All-Americans respectively, the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association announced today.
Utley, who was a first-round pick by the Philadephia Phillies in this year's draft, also earned first-team All-America honors by the Sporting News, in addition to being named to Collegiate Baseball's All-America third team. The Long Beach, Calif. native was a member of the All-Pac-10 team and was named the Most Outstanding Player in the Oklahoma City Regional.
Utley finishes the 2000 season with a .382 batting average, 108 hits (tied for second-best in school history), 22 home runs and 69 RBI. Together, Utley and Scott combined for the most hits by teammates in Pac-10 history (220 hits). The previous record was 216 by Kevin Romine and Mike Sodders of ASU in 1981. Utley and Scott also became just the second duo in UCLA and Pac-10 history to rack up 20 home runs and 100 hits in a single season.
Scott was an eighth round draft pick by the Milwaukee Brewers and earned first-team All-America honors by Baseball Weekly and Collegiate Baseball, in addition to second-team honors by the Sporting News. Like Utley, Scott was also an All-Pac-10 selection this season.
A native of Granada Hills, Calif., Scott set a UCLA single-season record with 112 hits this season, breaking the previous record of 108 set by Troy Glaus in 1997. He ended the season with a .421 average, just seven points away from the UCLA single-season batting average record. Scott also added 23 doubles, 21 home runs and 76 RBI in 2000.
