Football Recruiting Class Announced

Feb. 7, 2001
LOS ANGELES - Safety Matt Ware, record-setting running back Tyler Ebell and offensive lineman Robert Cleary head the list of 18 student-athletes (17 from high school and one from junior college) who have signed letters-of-intent to attend UCLA. Ware and Ebell were selected to the Parade Magazine All-America team. Ware was named first-team All-America by USA Today and Cleary was also honored by USA Today as a second-team selection.
"We are very excited about this group of young men," said head coach Bob Toledo. "While I feel it always takes a few years to properly assess recruiting classes, I feel this one has outstanding potential. Our coaching staff did a great job of assembling a well-balanced class. We wanted to sign several defensive backs and offensive linemen and we accomplished that goal while fortifying other positions as well. The student-athletes in this group are not only outstanding football players, they are fine young men who will mesh well with our current group of players."
Five of UCLA's signees - offensive lineman Collin Barker, Cleary, Ebell, wide receiver Junior Taylor and Ware - were selected to PrepStar's Dream team. In addition, 11 of the new Bruins - offensive lineman Ed Blanton, tight end Keith Carter, defensive back Marcus Cassel, defensive back Matthew Clark, running back Jason Harrison, linebacker Spencer Havner, defensive back Jacques Lazarus, running back Wendell Mathis, offensive lineman Matt Mosebar, safety Jibril Raymo and quarterback John Sciarra - were named PrepStar All-Americans. Offensive lineman Mike McCloskey earned All-West honors from PrepStar while defensive lineman David /ViewArticle.dbml?DB_OEM_ID=30500&ATCLID=208195377 was listed on that publication's junior college All-America team.
SuperPrep's All-America team included seven new Bruins - Barker, Carter, Cleary, Harrison, Raymo, Taylor and Ware. In addition, Blanton, Cassel, Clark, Ebell, Havner, Lazarus, Mathis and Mosebar were named to one of SuperPrep's All-Region squads.
Tom Lemming's All-America team included five new Bruins - Carter, Cleary, Raymo, Taylor and Ware - and eight more - Barker, Blanton, Cassel, Ebell, Harrison, Havner, Mosebar and Sciarra - were named to his All-Region teams.
UCLA's list of signees also includes 10 members of the Long Beach Press-Telegram's Best in the West team, including one of the four players who received the maximum of 10 votes (Raymo). Also selected to the first team were Cassel, Cleary, Harrison, Havner, Mosebar, Taylor and Ware while Blanton and Ebell were named to the second team.
