UCLA Defeats BYU and CS Northridge In Dual Meets

UCLA's track & field teams defeated Brigham Young and CS Northridge in both dual and triangular scoring Saturday (April 13) at Drake Stadium.

Jeanette Bolden's Bruin women, this week rated No. 3 in the nation by Trackwire, improved to 4-0 overall in 2002 outdoor dual competition with victories over BYU (123-70), tied for No. 6 in the U. S., and CS Northridge (116-81, Northridge beat BYU 100-88 in dual scoring). The Bruin women also won the triangular competition (UCLA 169, CSN 117, BYU 101). In her ninth season as the Bruin women's track & field head coach, Bolden's career dual meet record is an unbeaten 67-0.

Bruin Women
The Bruin women had 11 individual event winners, led by true freshman Monique Henderson, sophomore Sheena Johnson and senior Bunmi Ogunleye.

Henderson, the prep woman's national record holder in the 400m, won the 400m (52.80, NCAA provisional qualifier) and ran on both of UCLA's winning relays (4 X 100m, anchor, 45.48, season-best, 4 X 400m, third leg, 3:35.14, season-best, NCAA provisional qualifier). Johnson, a two-time Outdoor All-American, won the 100m hurdles (13.56, season-best, NCAA provisional qualifier) and ran the second leg on UCLA's winning 4 X 400m relay. Ogunleye won the long jump (20-6 1/2, personal-best, NCAA provisional qualifier) and ran on both of the winning relays (4 X 100m , third leg, 4 X 400m, anchor leg).

Also winning for the Bruins, in the field ' sophomore Cari Soong in the hammer throw (190-5), freshman Jessica Cosby in the shot put (52-10), senior Darnesha Griffith in the high jump (5-10), freshman Briona Reynolds in the discus (172-8) and senior Tracy O'Hara in the pole vault (13-8).

Winning for the Bruin women on the track ' senior Julia Barbour in the 3000m steeplechase (11:01.08), junior Tiffany Burgess in the 800m (2:06.22, season-best, NCAA provisional qualifier) and freshman Alejandra Barrientos in the 1500m (4:33.38).

Unattached Competition
In the women's discus, UCLA great Seilala Sua, the four-time USA Outdoor discus champion who during her Bruin career (1997-2000) was the winningest athlete in NCAA Outdoor women's competition (six shot put/discus crowns), had a mark of 189-6 in the discus.

Looking Ahead
UCLA's final home meet of the season will be Saturday, May 4, hosting archrival USC in the schools' annual women's and men's dual meet.
