UCLA T & F Competes at UC San Diego Open (April 26-27)

UCLA's women's and men's track & field teams this weekend (Friday-Saturday/April 26-27) competed at the UC San Diego Open in LaJolla.

Bruin Women
Jeanette Bolden's UCLA women's squad was led by six event winners on the track ' freshman T'Carra Penick (100m/200m), a one-two-three (junior Tiffany Burgess, sophomore Lena Nilsson, junior Jessica Marr) sweep with the day's best times in an 800m heat; freshman Alejandra Barrientos with the best time in her 1500m heat; freshman Carolyn Shea won Friday's 3000m steeplechase and the Bruins won the 4 X 400m relay.

In the field, the UCLA women were led by ' senior Tracy O'Hara in the pole vault; sophomore Lara Saye won her section in the discus and junior Bridget Pearson triumphed in her section of the javelin. On the track - Penick won her heats in her 100m (section three, 12.64) and 200m (section four, 25.05, season-best); Burgess (2:06.30) won heat five in the 800m, followed by Nilsson (2:06.99, season-best, NCAA provisional qualifier) and Marr (2:07.39, season-best, NCAA provisional); Barrientos had the best time in her event, winning her section three 1500m heat (4:35.22); Shea's winning time in the 3000m steeplechase was 10:54.91 (personal-best, No. 3 in school history) and the Bruins won the 4 X 400m relay (3:48.22).

In the field ' O'Hara, the women's collegiate outdoor record-holder (14-7 1/4), won the pole vault with a winning mark of 13-3 1/2; Saye had the top mark in section two of the discus (180-3, personal-best, NCAA automatic) and Pearson placed first in flight one of the javelin (124-10, season-best).

In the first flight of the women's discus, former Bruin Suzy Powell, with the Asics Club, set a new American record in the event, with an effort of 227-10 (old mark was 216-10, Carol Cady, 1986). Another former Bruin throwing great, Seilala Sua, was second in flight one of the discus (205-8). Sua, the defending U. S. Champion in both the discus and shot put, had the best shot put mark of the day (54-10 1/4).

Looking Ahead
UCLA will host USC on Saturday, May 4 at Drake Stadium in the traditional annual dual meet between the two schools. The hammer throws will start at 9 a.m., the rest of the field events begin at 11 a.m. and the running events start at 12:30 p.m. The meet concludes at 4 p.m. with the running of the 4 X 400m relays.

Fox Sports Net West 2 will tape delay the USC at UCLA dual meet on Saturday, May 11 at 1 p.m.
