Wes Whisler Named Pac-10 Co-Player of the Week

WALNUT CREEK, Calif. - UCLA freshman first baseman Wes Whisler and CALIFORNIA junior catcher John Baker have been named Pac-10 Baseball Co-Players of the Week and STANFORD junior left-hander Tim Cunningham has been named Pac-10 Baseball Pitcher of the Week for May 6-12, Commissioner Tom Hansen announced today.
Whisler, from Noblesville, Ind., hit .368 (7-for-19) with three home runs, as UCLA won three of four games last week against Long Beach State and Arizona. Whisler knocked out multiple hits in three of those contests and extended his hitting streak to 11 games before going 0-for-4 on Saturday. He also added six runs and seven RBI. Whisler has 13 home runs on the season, two short of UCLA's freshman record of 15.
Baker, from Walnut Creek, Calif., batted .583 in Cal's series against Oregon State and helped the Bears to a three-game sweep over the Beavers. He was 7-for-12 with a double, grand slam home run and three walks. He also scored four times and drove in seven runs.
Cunningham, from Rocklin, Calif., helped Stanford win its Pac-10 series over Arizona State last weekend. He earned the Cardinal's 3-1 Sunday victory in the rubber game of the series, shutting the Sun Devils out over the first seven innings. Cunningham is 6-2 on the season and has a 3.97 ERA. He leads Stanford1s pitching staff with 15 games started.
The Player of the Week honor is the first for both Baker and Whisler in their careers. It is the 34th selection all-time for Cal and the 37th selection all-time for UCLA. The Pitcher of the Week honor is the first for Cunningham in his career, and the 59th selection all-time for Stanford.
