For the second year in a row, UCLA senior Chaniqua Ross, the defending NCAA Outdoor discus champion, has earned 2003 Verizon Academic All-District VIII second-team selection. From Laguna Creek HS in Elk Grove, Ross has a 3.45 GPA and is a sociology and African-American Studies major. Next fall, she will be attending graduate school at Cal-Berkeley. Earlier this spring, again for the second year in a row, Ross earned third-team distinction as a 2003 Arthur Ashe, Jr. Sports Scholar (given by Black Issues in Higher Education).
This spring, Ross has a discus season-best 184-8 and two weeks ago at the 2003 Pac-10 Championships, she placed second (180-3). She also has a personal-best 54-9.25 (No. 8 in school history) in the shot put.
This weekend (May 30-31), Ross and her teammates will be competing at the 2003 NCAA West Regional T & F meet, hosted by Stanford. Ross will defend her national collegiate discus title at the 2003 NCAA Outdoor T & F Championships, June 11-14 at CS Sacramento.
