Lovelia P. Flourney Elementary Learns About Careers At UCLA
Lovelia P. Flourney hosted their 2003 Annual Career Awareness Day last Friday to educate their students about the variety of career opportunities that are available to them. The day opened up with an opening ceremony hosted by the President of the Student Council, Mayra Acevedo and included various songs and numbers by the Flourney Chorus, the student council, and a special song sung by Flourney's own Sherilyn Williams. At the conclusion of the opening ceremony, each career participant introduced themselves and their professions which included massage therapists, FBI agents, sanitation workers, clothing designers, nurses, self defense consultants, lawyers, coast guard pilots, UCLA Football's Joe Hunter, and more.
Each career day participant was then dismissed to go visit various classrooms for a smaller, more personal presentation and question and answer session. As Joe Hunter visited his 3 classrooms, the student's eyes lit up when he walked in each of the rooms. He explained a little about what position he plays at UCLA and what it takes to be a student-athlete at UCLA. The students were very active in asking questions to Joe, such as "Have you ever gotten injured? When did you decide to start playing football?" and "If you could have chosen to do something else, would you have?". The students were very attentive as they listened to what Joe had to tell and teach them about school, teamwork, discipline and hard work.
Before Joe left each classroom, all of the students received autographed football posters and UCLA Bruin pencils. They also learned the infamous UCLA 8-clap for when they will come to a UCLA Football game next season as part of the "I'm Going To College" program.
