Indiana wins its seventh NCAA title and third back-to-back title (previous back-to-back years were 1982-83, 1998-99)
Indiana is now 7-6 in championship games.
This was the third championship game decided by penalty kicks. In 1990, UCLA defeated Rutgers on penalty kicks, and in 1991, Virginia defeated Santa Clara on penalty kicks.
Last week, the women's championship was decided on penalty kicks, with Notre Dame defeating UCLA.
The Gauchos lost for the first time in overtime this season - they were previously 6-0-1 in overtime games. Indiana was 4-2 entering the game.
The 50 fouls between both teams (30 by UCSB and 20 by Indiana) tied the NCAA Tournament record held by Rhode Island and Connecticut in 1979 (4 overtime game)
The attendance for today's championship game was 13,601, the seventh-highest championship game total in history and the highest since the 1999 final drew 15,439.
